Best way to set up an external PCIE x1?

I have an internal soundcard, the Creative X-Fi Titanium HD, that normally connects to a PCIE x1 port. I want to free up some space in my case, so I was thinking of using it externally. What's the best way of doing this?

Would a PCIE x1 extender cable be a good idea? Would it affect latency or throughput?

I know that there is dedicated forum for sound cards, but I thought of asking here because of the general nature of the PCIE x1 port.

I have a 2.5-slot graphics card that's a little too close to the sound card, which is obstructing the airflow. The sound card is almost completely covered by a plastic case. The only thing missing is a backplate, so it still can't be handled like a real external sound card, but I haven't yet decided what to do about that.
