Running WindowsXP
If I have a modem router M and computers A and B

My setup is as follows
A-M-B

however Windows says this an insecure way of sharing info between A & B and I'm finding it difficult to configure my firewall.

Is it worthwile have a NAS box (C) and having a setup like this, i.e. everything goes through the NAS box. Or am I talking arse ?

M

C--A
¦
B

It's a modem router. I'm not sure how to allow traffic from one computer to the other whilst firewalling the internet. I'm using Kaspersky 2010 internet suite.

I did a quick ninja edit :p

If you are sharing a large amount of files a nas box is an option but you could plug that directly in to the router

Your first setup was fine. Anything else is down to Windows networking (somewhat dependent on the versions of Windows) and the firewall software you're running (Kaspersky).

Don't worry about a NAS unless you actually want a separate device to store data on your network. In which case you'd just plug it into the back of the switch ports on your modem/router like everything else.
