ok my bro just got back from uni and it's really running at half it's speed, took load of crap out of start-up and still really slow. any suggestions?

Yeah it should just be a case of unscrewing a panel and popping in the appropriate type/amount of ram.

Could try a defrag overnight first though.

is laptop ram same as desktop ram?

No, laptops use SODIMMS for their RAM. Personally, I would try CCleaner, Spybot, M$ Defender and an AV scan just to make sure there's nothing dodgy there. Delete unused files etc, you could also try Tune XP which will improve boot times etc.

When you say you cleared a lot of startups, have you just taken things out of the %USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder? If so, then check whats starting up via MSCONFIG (from the run box) but remove any entries you feel you need to from the registry at HKLM > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > Run- do not remove them from MSCONFIG. If you are unsure of what to remove, either post them here or in the windows forum and we can help :) (Just thinking about it, maybe this should be in the windows forum...?)

na i used msconfig and took out all that like msn, itunes, kodak etc. crap. i already done spyware, and ad ware scans

Don't overclock the CPU, unless you put the CPU fan to "always on" and if the CPU is still within safe temps during 100% load 1 hour, during summer.

Depends on how slow your machine is, a fresh install will help, but if it's got 128MB it'll still be quite slow. Really 1GB RAM for a laptop is desireable now. Since laptop hard drives are quite slow you want as much RAM as possible.
