My laptop Intel Core 2 2.0Ghz with 3GB ram has recently been running quite slow. It's only rarely used mostly for syncing to my iPhone, converting videos etc and photo work.

It seems to take an age to boot, but has minimal software.

Windows 7 32bit professional
AVS Video Converter
AVG 8.5
Monzilla Thunderbird
Firefox
iTunes
& Picasa 3

My other daily laptop that is a single core running the same version of Windows seems to boot a lot quicker and generally less sluggish.

Apart from the usual disc cleanup, can anything be done?

To be honest, I'd uninstall AVG and see if things improve. Assuming you haven't got a raft of apps loading at startup hogging RAM and CPU time, it's the most likely culprit. You could install Winpatrol to keep on top of whats running on your system.
