i'm in 2 minds () as to what to do, my first thought was to get an NAS (seen a 1 drive version on a well known auction site for £32.50) or go for a home server

i have 3 x 360's and 1 ps3 i want to stream media too, media types are mkv 720p + 1080p, divx, xvid and mp3 and the total will be less than 1tb so the 1 drive option is morethan enough although fat 32 on the NAS would be a problem with the larger mkv's i can always keep them on my pc

the home server option will of course cost more (unless i can use my old system i have under the bed (athlon 2700+)) but this also has it's problems like i want to have it sitting there without having to touch it and the software i use at the mo is very hit and miss (ps3 media server) with me having to restart it all the time and it not working on my 360's,

so if i go with the home server what software is best? is there an option to stream to both ps3 and 360?

would also like to add that it's unlikely that all 3 xbox's and the ps3 are streaming at the same time but there could be 2 on streaming at the same time (mainly divx/xvid and music)

so any help you guys can provide would be most welcome :)

A NAS won't help you for any non native 360/PS3 files (i.e mkv). I have a NAS and used it to stream to both a 360 and PS3 fine, but only for divx/mpg and other supported files. The NAs does not have to be FAT32 afaik, on PS3 only locally attached drives via USB have to be Fat32 and some for 360 I think. My NAS is EXT3 filesystem and worked fine.

Dunno too much about the home server route as I have only ever used tversity (sp?) and PS3 media server, but never used anything for both systems at once.
