I want to measure (accurately) the performance of my network to a) check everything is configured. b) check for bottlenecks that may need upgrading.

The network is a mix of wireless router, wireless bridge, wired machines and wireless machines.

I'm running: 2 x vista laptops, 1 x XP, 1 x Windows Home Server, TiVo and Xbox 360

I realise testing performance from tivo and xbox may not be possible but I'd like to test the links from each of the workstations to the WHS.

So what software do I need and how should it be configured?

I find using iperf a good way to test the throughput of a network connection.

If you want a GUI for it then google for jperf, although you will need Java for that.
