I in my haste formatted one of my sata 2 drives during windows install. Now can anyone reccomend a good program to use to recover it? in the past ive used stella phonix to good effect, but im not sure it will work on windows 8.1?

Getdataback for NTFS.

Always disconnect the other drives before installing any operating system.

Zero Assumption Recovery is a great application but make sure you do not save anything to the drive before you run recovery on it and any recovered files do not restore them to the same drive.

Good luck.

CQ.

Can I ask why you should remove all drives?

Apart from doing what the OP has done... As you probably know, Windows and other OSes can create and use other partitions and hidden files during installation. If these other drives have had OSes on them, the installation can confuse previous installations and use the existing files and partitions from other installs, which then busts your OS if you remove or reformat these other drives later on.

More unlikely is that the installation will use other drives to create this stuff. Just safer to know it's only got one choice.

And that's before we get into the realms of UEFI.

Mainly to stop Windows using other drives as the 'system' drive, sometimes you can end up with a strange drive letter (ie, not C:) as your Windows drive.

Also, you could do what the OP did :D

I remember with my first PC I had two drives installed, while I selected the correct drive for Windows 7, the boot partition ended up on the other drive, which meant I had to select that drive as the first boot drive. So best to have only one drive connected to ensure everything goes to the right place.

... And to not do what OP did :D.
