Since jailbreaking talk is now allowed.. Tell me, what is the best way to unlock my spare iPhone 4 32GB, that i have sitting around?

Perhaps i can give it to my missus then who's on a simple SIM based pay as you go network (in the USA)

Not looking for a step by step.. Just a direct pointer from those in the know, and I'll do the rest.

Type this subject into Google, and you get thrown a load of dodgy sites, all wanting money for this or that. So coming here to cut through the crap and figure out which tree I should be barking at.

You can either jailbreak it and use something called ultrasn0w or contact the network you were on and pay them a small fee to unlock it.

All depends what firmware/baseband it's on

Currently only the baseband that can use UltraSn0w is below 02.10.04, which came with 4.1

If you're above 4.1 then you may be out of luck.

Last alternative is GeveySIM. Research that, although I wouldn't recommend

Was it on a contract? because O2 and a lot of other carriers (or networks) will unlock your phone once you're out of contract

Contact your provider first off, see what they can do for you. I find software unlocks to be a mare, and you're always playing cat/mouse with them every time they update the baseband.

The reason I bought a phone locked to my provider this time around, couldn't be miffed. All it'll take is your Mrs to do a sync, see there's a new iOS update available, have a funny 5 seconds and click "update" and she's got a useless phone until the Dev Blog guys find another vulnerability to exploit. I'm not saying she's not savvy but it happens to the best of us!
