Hi,

Im wanting to upgrade my 10 year old rig specs are below. (never used for gaming just a basic desktop rig internet etc)

Intel i5-4570 3.20GHz Quad Core
MSI H87M-E33 Intel H87 (Socket 1150)
8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz
MSI GeForce GT 1030 LP OC 2048MB GDDR4 PCI-Express
Samsung SSD 860 EVO 500GB
430W Corsair Builder Series 430CX 80PLUS Bronze

I need to do this on the cheap so second hand parts only.

I'm going to start with the Mobo/CPU/RAM but i'm not sure weather to go with AMD or Intel or rather AM4 or LGA 1700, any advice on which direction i should go.

Which ever direction i go i want a solid mother board that will allow me to one day get the fastest CPU i can get when they are cheaper in a few years.

Ill just grab the cheapest CPU i can to start to keep cost down.

Is my current Power Supply good enough for AM4 or LGA 1700 mother boards ?

Over the next year or longer I'll upgrade the storage and graphics card to hopefully something that allows me to play 1440p games.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks Ben

Not quite clear what the question is.
Are you still only going to use your computer for non-gaming purposes?
If so then there's no need to upgrade. If you do want to game, then you will need a full new system. There isn't anything to carry over save the SSD.

Also bit confused you say never used for gaming then you may want to game at 1440p in the future?

What can your machine not do now that you need? Budget?

Sorry i really have put that post together in a mess.

I would like to start gaming on PC in the future at 1440p so want to get a system that will allow me to build on it and add in a proper GPU at some point.

So my current power supply is not compatible with the new AM4 / LGA 1700 mother boards ? So im gonna need Mobo/CPU/RAM and PSU to start and get me going.

I basically want to build a new system from used parts so its cheaper. Get a solid mother board so i can buy a new part or GPU every few months rather than one big spend.

I'm just not sure weather to start looking for AM4 or LGA 1700 used parts for the build.

Hoping that makes more sense (it does in my head :p )

Thanks for your help and patience :)

If you go AM4 you have a boat load of CPUs to upgrade to (5800X3D is the end point), but you'd need at least a 1600/2600 to start with, to be a reasonable upgrade from what you have.

I'd expect 1700 to be a lot harder to get a cheap used CPU, since it is a relatively recent socket and 12th gen CPUs are still available for sale brand new.

I'd look at a B450 or B550 board with a 2600/2700 (or newer), as a starting point.

I must say though, if you're this limited on budget, is 1440p gaming really a sensible goal? If you just stuck a half-decent GPU (e.g. RX 6600) and a 4 core, 8 thread CPU in your current PC, it would handle the majority of games just fine, except for the most demanding in the last few years. Video example:

I know you say you are buying used parts, but what is your overall budget?
A bit hard to pitch a proposed build (used or new) when there is literally nothing to work with

I understand but I was coming from the angle of getting the specific parts recommended the motherboard for example then I'll go off and look at used prices eBay etc.

I guess I rough amount for Mobo,CPU,ram and PSU is £300 all in used price.

"i want to buy a used computer but i won't tell you my budget"
replace computer with car and say it out loud :)
how the hell is anyone meant to know what to recommend lol

with that kind of budget, you'd be looking at a ryzen 5600, b550 mobo, 32gb ddr4 3200/3600 ram and a 650w psu
you have MM access so the above is easily achievable within +/- 10% of the budget (and might even be able to chuck in a 1tb nvme ssd)

a good 650w psu will power all but the top end gpus (ie not the nvidia xx80(ti)/90 or radeon x9xx cards) anything lower and it'll be fine
750w psu and you'll be fine for anything except the 4090

, I think that you are over thinking this a little for a basic desktop rig! Just get a 1440 monitor now, with your budget, and suck it and see with your current set up, enjoy a new lease of life basic rig, play some minecraft maybe, enjoy what you have again..
..I really think this is your best bang for buck option atm because there is nothing wrong with your current set up for what you want to do with it( never used for gaming just a basic desktop rig internet), just get the 1440 monitor, long story short

if you did then want a cheap, easy upgrade after that, I can see some AMD 8GB 5700 XTs on the bay for only £199 buy it now, so if you followed those for a while, I'm sure that you could snipe one for less, just be sure that you get the 8GB version of the 5700XT only, srsly!

all the best.
