I'm going to be delving into a bit of web development shortly and was just wondering what your thoughts are on web authoring packages. I have a lot of HTML experience but only from creating simple pages in Vim. I really don't like things like Frontpage where a lot of unecessary code is added (I would need my code to be clean and well structured).

Any ideas then on what package to go for?

I use Dreamweaver MX at work and revert to Notpad a lot. The newest version of Dreamweaver is meant to be good although I haven't used it much.

Bluefish if you're using Linux. Though I suppose your choice on program / package depends on how much you like writing code and/or html yourself. The Gimp is a nice alternative to Photoshop. You could also take a look at nvu for web authoring :)

I use dreamweaver 8, really good program as I don't really know enough html to make a site in notepad. Dreamweaver adds divs in for you as well, plus links css style sheets up nicely so you can edit an external style sheet from the page it's linked to so you can see the changes as they happen, which I think is really cool. Also has a html validator and browser validator to see if the site will work in all browsers, I think the program also cleans up the code for you as you go along, which is really neat.

You can get a free trial from the Macromedia website.

Used Frontpage for years and never had an issue with it

What the problem is, that frontpage adds loads of unwanted code, whereas the guy wants clean and structured code, that will validate. Anything created in design mode in frontpage had rubbish code.

That was the case with me, apart from I used frontpage. If you are just starting off to learn HTML on your own, have frontpage (or w/e program) open as well as notepad and then the stuff that you don't know, you do it dreamweaver, look at the code and then copy the bits that you need across to notepad....its what i did and I can now create a site in notepad.

That's some good advice, think I'll do that next time I build a site

I use Frontpage in code view to create the HTML. People laugh when I tell them until they see its valid XHTML Strict.
