best wifi router for 50mb virgin connection

hi.

So far so good with virgin 50mb connection :)

However netgear router is really poor, throttling wired pc to 40mb (sigh!) and not coping well with wifi connections from xbox, ps3 and tosh laptop.

Can anyone recommend a quality router for me? Must have at least 4 wired gigabit ports and fast reliable wireless N that will work well with consoles and other b / g devices. Streaming to the xbox would also be nice.

No real budget as long as does what it says on the tin. Working on virgin subsidising it anyway.

it's already on the list of possibility's along with d-link 855, belkin n1 and the linksys 610n. Not sure of the vigor's or any others?

Non are cheap and i wouldn't want to buy and find there not upto the job.
 
You will likely want one with Gigabit ports not normal Ethernet as you're going to be hovering on the throughput limit with normal 10/100 ports.
I have a Sitecom gigabit N WL-308 XR router, is very fine indeed.

I would check your pc first if your only getting 40mb through wired as I'm using the supplied Netgear router and get 50mb fine on my laptop and over 40 when on wireless N. Also works fine with another PC and PS3 on wireless and my 360 on wired.
 
modem straight into pc gives over 50, via router only 40.

Tosh laptop gets only 5mb using internal wifi, with N dongle this ups to 8. Xbox suffers from major lag as does ps3. Only thing that works well wirelessly is nokia phone.

Annoying thing is i get 90 - 100% signal strength on all machines, and as i'm in the middle of nowhere i can only pick up 1 neighbours network so i'd presume there's little interference.
 
I have a Belkin N1. I bought it to replace my four year old Belkin G router. I haven't noticed that much of a speed increase if i'm honest though. And there's still similar problems to those that were the reason i bought a new router in the first place. Such as not being able to connect all the time, sometimes randomly kicking you off etc... BUT my connection download speed maxes out at 0.5MB/s, which most likely means that since i'm reasonable close to the exchange station the whole system is being bottlenecked by bad wiring somewhere...

All in all, i wouldn't say stay well away, but i wouldn't say get it either. You would have to ask somebody else for a second opinion, but i don't think that this was the best use of my money looking back.

I should hear something back from virgin monday, but am seriously confused about how to go. Gow2 was awful last night, router kicking me off, massive lag. Laptop will not give more than 8mb throughput. Even when sat in the same room as router.

I could hardwire the xbox but really need a wireless connection for the laptop and ps3.

Well, here I have 20 meg Virgin, and with my Toshiba laptop and all my desktops I get the full 20 meg on wireless. And it is reliable as well - so I'd have to say wireless is quite impressive. Where it does fall down is file transfers between machines, but for straight internet work, it has worked perfectly for me for over 12 mths now, initially with 10 meg and now 20 meg, at full speed.

Wired through Netgear router to laptop;

Last Result:
Download Speed: 50740 kbps (6342.5 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 1644 kbps (205.5 KB/sec )

Through Wireless N to same laptop;

Last Result:
Download Speed: 50463 kbps (6307.9 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 1641 kbps (205.1 KB/sec )

There is nothing wrong with the supplied Netgear router!
 
Im using Virgin 20mb with Belkin N1 and cant really fault it although it isnt without the odd oddity/issue.

Supports gigabit between modem/router and the wired devices (4 pc's) transfer at around 85-90 mb/s (Utilising 9k Jumbo frames which router seems to supports too(unofficialy?))

Wireless works mostly fine, no issue maxing out 20mbit internet, but for some odd reason hitting a wall of 6/8 mb/s network transfer (in N Mode - laptop confirms working at 300mbit). Same laptop gets 12 mb/s on my mates dlink 655 network (limited by ethernet 100mbit macheins) but wirless devices constantly disconects on that router if trying to download or stream vids.
 
maybe my router is duff then. Using speedtest.com from manc or brum i get 50+ with the modem directly into the pc. Sometimes nearly 60. Wired via the router it always throttles to around 40.

Wifi to laptop - built in card only 5, with n dongle this ups to 8. When using n dongle netgear control panel tells me it'r connected at 300mbps.

My only experience with networks was back when all cabling was done with co-ax bnc plugs and sockets and terminators, however i'd like to think i'm not stupid so should be able to sort this out. I even taught the virgin engineers some basic tricks when they installed the modem.. . .
