I've just used Raxco PerfectDisk on an ailing windows xp disk to find that I now have a revived fluid running machine like the day it was first installed

Yes I'm shocked too. It seems like its 'smartplacement' defrag method (bunching rarely modified files together etc) has given me a performance boost.

Is there anything else out there ?

I use PerfectDisk but I've recently discovered http://www.majorgeeks.com/Power_Defragmenter_GUI_d4647.html and http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/FileAndDisk/Contig.mspx.

Put the contig.exe in the same folder as the Power Defragmenter GUI exe and run the GUI. You then have a fully functioning, free defragging solution.:D

Tried it out on my C: drive yesterday. PerfectDisk reported the fragmentation at about 9%. Was down to 0.1% when the Contig/Power Defragmenter combo had finished.

So buy a defrag prog by all means, I have, but for a freebie this is brilliant.

nice. i'll definitely give that a go. i've used contig in the past to defrag single files but it'll be nice to have a gui. :)
