Best windows platform for games ?

feels more glossy

It probably does if you're running it on an 8600GT - it's not exactly a high end card.

I've only found two games so far that won't run on Windows 7 - and apart from that, it's been perfect. I'd go as far as to say Win7 is better for gamers than Vista - it has proper monitor spanning support, multi GPU support (as in, ATI and nVidia cards together), and seems to launch my games faster.

I'm too old and mature to be updating my signature every 2 months

I have the following cards at my disposal .... 4870x2, 4870 (to be sold), 4830, 8800gt, 8600gt is being repaired, there must be a fair few in boxes too. Now which one would you like me to game on ... ? To me they all look all sh**

Could be an issue with directx ? Think I might just go for a fresh OS install hence the nature of my original question.

Thanks for your rec for win 7 ... What games didn't work on it ? Think I might go win7

Vista64 is the best IMO as:

1) It supports DX10
2) It supports >4GB RAM

#2 isn't that big a deal really as memory usage will be lower for 32bit apps and in most cases you aren't like to breach the 3.25GB or whatever. Something like GTA4 with High textures could do it though.

I love the people jumping on the I hate Vista band wagon because it makes you e-cool, seriously things have moved on a ton, stay on your XP installs and tell yourself how amazing it is.

you can have those roll eyes back.

If you're not going to update what h/w you have in your sig, then don't have h/w in your sig.

I was trying to be helpful, and I was going off what hardware I assumed you had - sorry for the input!

I'm still using XP. It wasn't a gaming decision, I just couldn't justify an upgrade to Vista with all the pre SP1 shenanigans. XP has served me fine on my games and tbh, I don't see a great deal to gain using DX10 over DX9 - mind you, my GFX card is no graphics whore and I'm only using 2gb RAM.

I'm going to wait another year for Windows 7 and ray-tracing compatible graphics cards before I upgrade again...

Changing your OS will not automatically make a game look better. Games that support DX10 may benefit from extra settings unavailable in DX9 but as Grid is not a DX10 title, there will be no difference.

Only thing I can think why it might look "better" on the 360 is if it has some kind of digital vibrance setting that increases the contrast therefore making it appear more colourful. (I Know the PS3 has such a setting).

In terms of polygons and frame rates, the pc should be superior but it might be worth checking the advanced graphics settings within the game as that gives you access to stuff like levels of detail that may not have been applied automatically.

or apply some AA. You should be able to apply tons of the stuff on a 4870 and it barely slow down at all.

I'm on Vista 64 and play GRiD on my PC (spec in sig) and it looks awesome!
I don't own an xbox anymore and have not seen this game running on one, but i don't think it could better how the game looks to me.

Also as zytok say's, there are LOTS of extra settings in the options menu to turn up eye candy, have a play, you should get to MAX everything, also set the resolution to your monitors MAX, if that doesn't outshine your xbox there must be something wrong.

Yes there was something wrong....

Took off the lazy overclock 4830@700/1000 (I didn't check it thoroughly) and went to stock....

Went max res and it really does look good.

Sweet enough for me to get my PSP out of the closet and use that as a wireless joystick.

Thanks guys.
