Best wireless network solution

I am currently running 4mB Virgin media broadband on a Linksys router to two computers, both placed approximately 6 metres from the said wireless device. The connectivity is appalling - we both have about one bar of connection from the wireless router.

So....

What in your opinion is the best wireless network solution in terms of range, speed and cost?

Reading a wee bit about powerline networking and Im intrigued. What's better at this moment in time; powerline networking or a 802.11n router?
