Best wireless router? Should I get homehub 2.0? (urgent!)

We've had some bad luck with routers.

- Belkin 54g router (2 years ago) was ok for a while, but then broke. Like most Belkin products.

- Netgear 54g rangemax (1 year ago) was good while it lasted. Then it broke.

- BT Homehub 1.0 (two this year). Worked reasonably for a while, then suddenly the wireless range died. Ordered a new one and the same thing happened immediately.

My dad is hardly an expert on computers, but nonetheless is convinced that despite my reasonable competence I am to blame. Luckily I've found enough information online to convince him the homehub 1.0 really is a dire piece of kit, so he has agreed to fork out for a fine piece of kit to take care of things.

- We are with BT already, but by simply commiting our existing package to a 12 month contract we can get the homehub 2.0.

- I am looking at the Netgear DG834N. This looks like a fine piece of kit.

- I once wrote a letter advising Belkin's technical support supervisor to kill himself. Have they got any better?

I connect with a cable that runs to a router in my room, but the other pcs in the house use wireless. Some of them are very far away and the ability to use laptops in the garden would be great. so range is important.

N Compatibility is also something I want, I don't have N compatible equipment yet - but will be tempted to upgrade to some at some point. Can they really go faster than cables?

So which is better, a BT Homehub 2.0, or a nice top of the line Netgear ADSL wireless router?

Also, what about gigabyte ethernet? I know the homehub 2.0 doesn't have it, does the Netgear? I take it everything else needs to be compatible too - my pc, and my router in my room? Tell me about it.

the netgear doesnt have gigabit ethernet but is a pretty good router.
otherwise the Netgear DGN2000 maybe, i think its the same router but with external aerials to improve the wireless range even more

What are you doing in your house, arc welding ? :D
I have several BT Homehubs, not one has failed & I have had a Belkin router working non stop for 6 years with Belkin adapters, again no problem.

This is easily the most shocking thing I've ever read :p

Seriously though you should go get a lottery ticket.

To the OP - My personal experiance would be to stay away from the homehub and get a netgear, regardless of if you go N or not they are still good.

Upgrading to N would be a hefty cost. but you could buy the router now and use it with G for the time being.

Go netgear, I think you must have been unlucky with your previous one? I've been running a DG384 for 5+ years and it's been flawless. As have the ones I've installed for my brother, Dad and wife's work. I've found the models with exterior aerials best especially as you can upgrade/extend the supplied aerial if you're tucking the router away somewhere and/or having reception issues.

Many thanks for your comments. Partly on the basis that dad has just found out the damage on one of my student overdrafts - necessitating me to pretend I have had an economist’s revelation - I have decided to propose we go for the HH 2.0 as it is virtually free, and if we have to get a Netgear later than so be it. I’ll report back on how it goes!

You can't get cheaper than a free one. I honestly don't know what the issues are with HomeHubs, mine (V 1.5) does exactly what it is supposed to. I changed the security from the factory default, opened a few ports & so far, it is flawless. (Just going to buy a Lottery Ticket as suggested) :)

I got a BT hub today, the new V2, I have so much faith in it I won't even open the box... and I need a new router... Ebay is best place for it :)

Could somebody please tell me what they want a HomeHub to do that it doesn't ? I have had no reliability issues myself if that is the problem people are having.

It generally just stops working, I think its coupled with the fact that BT will rarely admit they dont work well.

Its normally a failure with the wireless signal I believe.
