Ok, had my first couple of crashes last night and just played it for a bit and got a disc read error! lol :D

Could this be the start of the end? Was to be expected tbh.

I don't know really, I had disc-read errors and crashes on both my Xbox360 and Playstation 3 in the past, just like I have on PC's.

I'm not saying it's not though :p.

I had random disc read errors for months (possible a year?) before my 360 finally died. So good news is that it might not die soon, bad news is that if it follows my old 360's route it will die eventually :p

My 2 year old console was giving me "Unplayable Disc" messages today.I took it apart and cleaned the lens and now it is fine.

I was quite suprised how little dust was inside to be honest.I smoke a lot and I've had it nearly 2 years and it was nowhere near as bad as that gimp who was crying to sony because they wouldn't replace his PS3.

God knows what he had done to it.

I reckon you will be OK, my 2nd console has been giving me this on and off for over 6 months. The symptoms I notice is normally when I pause a game for ages or stay on a screen or dashboard, disc spins down eventaully, has trouble spinning up and you hear "tick" sound every few seconds as it tries to pick up/spin up the disc and then you get the error you speak of. (My discs are not scratched obviously and the console has been placed horizontally.) I have been meaning to clean the Lens as I say this to everyone who has this issue, but the gimp who has borrowed by disc cleaner hasn;t given it back and I genuinely don't care that much. As it doesn't happen on demand it would be hard for me to know if it was fixed or not. If you are getting it very often then the lens cleaners you get should help.

(before anyone asks I am out of warranty so just live with it and it's not that often to bug me, and I am fussy normally!))

Huh? What guy, what replacement?
Why wouldn't Sony replace it?

I've found Sony's support to be impeccable, they replaced mine without any worries at all, almost faultless.

The "dust guy". How have you missed out on one of the funniest support stories of the year?
Initailly everyone slated Sony for not repairing it, but once Sony released the pictures it all became clear (or dusty :D )

The night before my Xbox 360 died it was getting stuck on cut scenes on Crackdown. Before that, I had no problems what so ever.

lasers weaken over time, if the console is a launch one I wouldn't be too supprised you get the occasional read error now.

i dont want to jinx my ps3....but occasionally when i put even newish ps3 discs into the drive it doesnt load the game, just hangs, so i have to eject the disc and clean it. (the ps3 drive must be incredibly fussy over specks of dust). After that all is fine..

It was my drive that went on my first one, games began to hang and not play or just simply lockup and the console wouldn't turn off without switching it off at the back.

If it keeps doing it then give Sony a call, the number is in the back of all the games manuals (but oddly enough, not in any of the hardware manuals).

Im gonna have a party when my xbox is 2! :p

January 20th.

Really can't believe it's lasted this long.
