I have a powercolor 7870 myst (tahiti le) card and the stock cooler is a bit loud and doesnt keep the card as cool as i'd like. so what will fit?

i like the look of the Alpenföhn Peter coolers on ocuk but which one would i need to go for? since this card is based on a 7900 series core would the 7900 series cooler fit?

any better coolers for the money?

thanks,
smithy

ive just bought one of these for a customer, its sat behind me still shrink wrapped.

Is the stock cooler bareable and what temps are you seeing in game? its going into a Fractal R4 with sound proofing material so a little quieter than it usually would be.

I have the Alpenfohn and after looking at pics of the Myst pcb, I'd say it's a no go.

Assuming the heatpipes didn't clash with anything, the heatsink would hang too far off the back of the card and you'd have no vrm cooling due to their placement on the pcb unless you used side exhaust fans on the bracket which may not be an option in your case.
EDIT: Actually, you could get away with it by using 140mm fans mounted on the bracket and placed underneath the cooler. I probably wouldn't go for the Peter in your situation though :)

You could probably get away with an Accelero 7950/70, but you'd need to make sure you have case clearance by the hdd bays as it would also hang further back than it would on a 7950/70.

It's bareable at idle but becomes noticeable at load even though fan is only around 50% :p

Temps are 76c ingame, not the lowest although nothing to worry about either.

I'd prefer going passive thus a water block

well at idle its fine but anything above 35-40% fan speed sounds like a vacuum cleaner. i have set a custom fan profile in afterburner and it doesn't exceed 70c and 30% fan speed while gaming but even that is louder than i would like in all honesty

dont worry about clearance, anything that doesnt fit will be made to fit :) my drive cage has been taken out of my case with a hammer anyway

That's interesting you got 70c at 30% fan speed, both reviews for the VTX3D 7870 Black have higher temps at 74 & 76c :p And this is also at a higher fan speed ;)

well that is on stock clocks, i want more headroom for the overclocks i know its capable of too so i know 70c isnt that bad but i need it to be lower so i can make it higher again

plus its still a little too loud
