OK, I was going to upgrade my brother's PC.
It would however seem I've bought the wrong CPU.
Having thought I was buying an E6600 (Core 2 Duo) it would appear what I've got is a Dual-Core Pentium 4.
So, which is the better CPU:

Core 2 DUo 2.13Ghz (Current CPU)
Dual Core P4 3.09GHz (Purchased CPU)

Which one should I be installing in his machine?

Core 2 Duos poo all over Pentium 4s. They're something like twice as efficient per clock speed, so a 4ghz P4 would only be about as fast as a 2ghz Core 2. Not to mention other improvements.

Are you sure this new CPU is a Pentium? As some newer cheaper Core 2s are labelled Pentiums but don't use the Netburst architecture.

The packaging says:

Freq. 3.06 GHz
FSB 1066 MHz
Cache 2MB
Socket LGA775
PCG 06
Pentium Processor E6600

not 100% sure but i think its a pentium dual core based on the core 2 architecture (as opposed to a pentium d which was based on the pentium 4 architecture)

The Core 2 has the following markings on the top:

Intel Core 2 Duo
6400 SL989 Philippines
2.13GHZ/2M/1066/06
7638A420
