Which is better

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice
or an Opteron 146

they are both about the same price but ive heard rave reviews about the opteron. What about it you dont overclock?

does the cache on the opteron make much of a difference?

Im slowly coming to terms with the idea of getting a new motherboard, cpu and graphics card.

The 3800 runs at 2.4ghz so is going to better than the slower 146 at 2ghz at stock.
However if you overclock get the 146 this will run at 2.4ghz no problem and has the extra cache

Even though its not an option, a better bet might be to get a 3700+ San Diego as that has the 1mb level 2 cache and are clocking high at the moment. Cheaper than both your mentioned chips to. If you choose not to overclock it, it will still be faster than the opteron 146 and pretty much on par with the 3800+.

ordered! now to get a motherboard (im thinking dfi nf4 ultra-d and a graphics card) thats when i have some money though
