'Better' Router = Better speeds ?

Might be a numpty question :D

I'm currently using a Netgear DG834Gv3 54 Mbps Wireless ADSL Firewall Modem.

Hard wired to main PC, wireless to laptop.

Any point in changing it, to try and get more speed, or is it solely line dependant ?

What kinda speeds are you getting? Might be worth upgrading to a V4, they use the broadcom chipset and apparantly there's some feature you can use to tweak your line connectiong things and give it a boost, someone on here got there's from 4mb to 6mb by doing that.

Depends what you're getting now really? You can estimate how much more you'll gain but you won't really know without testing it.

I've never used anything posher, but I have the V5 and it's a seriously good router, I may upgrade it to a V4 or a DG834GT to get the Broadcom chipset, but at the moment I get 5.2mbps, which means I get pretty much instant internet access. It's dead stable aswell so I don't have issues with MSN signing out all the time and that sort of thing.

Currently getting a stable 6meg from an upto 8meg package, which isn't bad.



Just changed to a 'maximum the line/exchange will handle' package, which i'm told is ~ 9meg.

So no point changing router then ?

It's up to you really, I'd see if it goes up any more with the new package, and if it's not high enough for your liking, upgrade to a V4 or a GT.

I'm on upto 8meg, just ran speedtest and got 5.3meg, the router itself rates the line as 6.1meg though so I might change the V5 for a V4/GT at some point. 5.3meg is fast enough for me for now though.
