You will see an improvement with a dedicated sound card, yes. Get a USB DAC. They are worth the cost.

If you do want more bass, I agree with HornetStinger to get a subwoofer. The DAC won't per say increase bass per say but you could use an app to increase the bass profile for all audio.

Just know that your speakers will only be able to output certain audio frequencies and the larger the speaker, the larger the size of the delta of the wave of the frequency that they will be able to recreate and the more bass they will have (lower frequencies have a larger audio wave size).

I am a huge fan of dedicated DACs and see the onboard audio for motherboards as a waste for me personally (I know that a lot of people can't afford to buy both a DAC and a motherboard for a new system so use only the onboard audio).

The R1855 you mentioned has a DAC inside of it, if you go that route you can use your Realtec to provide a digital source into those speakers and won't require a sound card. The quality of the DAC inside the Edifiers should be of at least reasonable quality.

If your going to the trouble of upgrading to better Edifier speakers, and want more lower end, these are also an option, again they have a DAC inside of them.

Oh Edifier do some pretty good speakers really. I mean they are not audiophile, they fall down a little on visual presentation, but they are darn good for the money. You can do a lot worse.

Currently there is a shop on ebay who is clearing out new Edifier 2000DB's for half price. That's £130 (that includes next day delivery). They are worth every penny. Really good speakers even at their full price of £260. He's genuine too, I know, I bought a pair.

You don't really need a new sound card, they have optical in.

Anyway, motherboards are usually pretty good and you can always use the audio out and whatever software came with your motherboard to tweak the sound. At the moment I have a cheap SB, which is more than good enough. The SB Z SE ( I think it is ) is on sale at around £49 at the moment a the jungle.

Oh mate I feel for you - still debating what shall I do myself. For now adjusted onboard soundcard with Realtek equalizer and it's much much better.

I have separate cassette decks (yes tape) that sound better than some of the motherboard audio I've listened to.
