Going to be getting a Phenom II 940 soon when they drop in price and am moving to AM2+ so i want a CPU to use as a stop gap in the mean time.

So lookin on Members Market.

What will be on par on AM2 with my Opteron until i get a Phenom II?

when multi-tasking or running multi-threaded applications, i would say any athlon x2 above 2.5GHz should be faster as there are 2 core to spread the load between, however in single threaded applications, your opteron should pull out ahead

Just from popularity and finding one I would think a 5200BE or a 5400BE should be a good choice and very affordable. Either should give ya 3.0 fairly easy but I fully admit my AMD facts and figures have gone way down in the past few years. If ya wanna just go cheap as possible you might be able to pick up something in the 4200+ brisbane range and would think its as fast if not faster. Im not sure what it converts to but they sell here in the states for like $40 US.

Yes, I have an Opteron 175 than I had been running at 2.5 for a while.

I then decided to buy a cheap E6300 and it not only murdered the Opteron, but also did its entire family and then buried the remains in fred wests garden!!

I still use my Opteron and I love it to bits but they are in a completel;y different league.

However...

You are running yours at 3.0Ghz ( I only managed 2.8 out of my 146 - I also still have that too! - I rarely get ris of kit ) and thats a monster setup it really is so you wont be blown away by the speed differences at first... When you use up the cores, it will start to come into its own, but on the face of it you wont see THAT much... Not for general use anyway.
