Beyerdynamics mmx300 how to improve sound?

Hi I have the BD MMX300 headset and only have onboard sound. What is best to pair them with? Do I go internal or external. The main use for the headset is gaming. I see some people say get external DAC some say go for a pcie card.

Well for gaming, I imagine you'd want to be able to locate positional sounds? So you'd want something with Dolby Headphone or SBX, which rules out just a DAC, as they provide stereo sound with no effects for gaming.

There are external and internal options, so depends what you are looking to spend.

If you're not fussed about the 5.1/7.1 surround sound effects, and would prefer just decent stereo, then there are some good external DAC/amp options. You'd still need to connect the microphone to your onboard audio though, as DACs are output only.

MMX300 is based to DT770 which is bass heavy so Dolby Headphone's bass bloat would be bad... even without closed design amplifying feel of bass.

Audigy Fx would be cheapest card with SBX Pro Surround.
Sound Blaster Z has better components and better connections.
Retail version seems to be in discount at the moment.
