Hi.

I'm currently using the following

3570k (mild overclock)
HD7950
8gb ram
1080p 120hz monitor

This is doing me fine at the moment, but still, I feel like I want some new things...

I'm considering jumping to 1440p/1600p soon. What sort of money am I looking to drop for a "nice" monitor and a graphics card to run it? Would be happy to drop to lower levels of AA for the games with silly requirments as I dont play those kind of games very often. £500?

I think I'll wait untill freesync, big maxwell and amd 3xx is out anyway. I know you cant predict the world of tech, but that looks like as good of a time as any right? free/g/sync @ 1440/1600/p sounds tasty

Not really the most coherent of posts I know, but I'm happy to hear peoples thoughts on wether it is, or nearly is, time to make the move.

Currently I'd say £1200ish (2x970 and the Swift) as I'm guessing you wouldn't want to drop to 60Hz from 120Hz.

Waiting will give you an advange, and like you say it can't really be accurately estimated...

I would be happy to drop to 60hz. 120hz really wasnt as much of a game changer as I thought it would be tbh (to my eyes anyway).

EDIT - better add a sli capable mobo to that total too lol.

I personally do not have any plans to update my GTX 670 sli and 120hz samsung monitor until we get 4k monitors with freesync and a single card that can handle it at a reasonable price. Wait for the next fabrication technology node cards plus I think we still need a bit more time until 4k monitors really become mainstream. I want to see the 4k technology mature a bit before investing in it. If you are happy with what you have now maybe its better to wait.

You can spend much less than this, I'm running a ROG swift on SLI 660s and was playing Payday 2 bouncing off my 135FPS cap most of the time with the odd dip down to about 100. As a single 970 beats my 660's you could easily cope with only the one card.

You're right, I forgot that the monster 660's have the ability to play *any* AAA game at 1440p and full details

Silly me. Excuse me whilst I go and give myself 100 lashings with a cat-o-nine tails

Some people don't need to play every triple A game at full details. Like OP who stated that he rarely plays super graphically demanding games.

I don't know how SLI 660s compares to a single 780 but I know for a fact that it can run modern games at 1440p ~80fps and still look fantastic.
