Hi All

I'm really annoyed at the moment as I am completely unable to play BF2 on my newly built pc.

I built the pc at the weekend and have managed to get playing a couple of days ago having manually installed and updated punkbuster and making sure to run the game as admin but when I tried to play last night everytime I connected to a server, it would load up and I clicked on join game, then got to the class slection section and bang, crash to desktop everysingle time!

I tried googling and found loads of 'fixes' none of which worked, I fully uninstalled and reinstalled and it still didn't work. troied again and still didn't work and this time itwouldn't let me register the expansion packs ( I have the complete retail pack)

So uninstalled again and went to bed, thoroughly fed up and annoyed at having spent so much on a new pc and nt being able to play what I want on it!!

Any thoughts/advice or sympathy much appreciated.

Probably down to drivers as BF2 likes the older drivers, What drivers are you using / Need your specs as well.

well, only other games I've got are all steam ones.

Was playing stalker SOc last night and that seemed fine, also over last few days have played a bit of HL2, HL2 ep 2, Just Cause 2, Bioshock and they all seemed fine

Really annoying thing is that BF2 seemed to be fine, played it a few times, including for about a hour or so the other evening but yesterdya it just completely refused to work.

Don't use Steam games to judge your system you can play HL2 on a calculator. What drivers are you using ?

Also are you sure your heatsink hasn't rattled loose ?

Can't remember off the top of my head what drivers I've got installed for the graphics card but they are the ones that came with the card and BF2 worked fine before yesterday.

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor
Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard

Ordered last week and put together on saturday. PLayed BF 2 fine until yesterday.

There's not many people about who have played as much BF2 as me, On my system only the old drivers run BF2 without a glitch/bug/crash, It has always been a finicky **** of a game. Once up & running though it's the best online fps bar none.

If my memory fails me correctly .... wasn't there an issue with the default desktop screen size not being the same as BF2 default hence the crash. Open up BF2 folder (I dont have it installed mate) and edit the screen size to suit your setup.

BF2 used to crash for me when I had my monitor refresh rate set any higher than 60.

Drop your refresh rate to 60, and try 59 for good measure.

im running BF2 on windows 7, no problems at all.

have to checked your firewall, and background programmes? another thing to note is punk buster make sure it's fully updated.

I used to get this CTD when PB wasn't updated.

Is it a fresh install of your OS? If all else fails, wipe and resintall (start from scratch). I do this with every major upgrade mainly because looking at a clean interface is so purty. At the sime time pray its not hardware.

I got a new PC last week, i5 2500k which I overclocked to 4.7ghz. New mobo/8gb ram/2gb 6950. Win 7.

Everything is upto date with newest drivers. The only trouble I had with bf2 was punkbuster kicking me everytime I joined. Fixed that and now it works 100%, I dont run as admin I just run as winxp with service pack 2.

So it can and does run with new updated drivers just fine as well.

The thing is though It was fine until yesterday evening. as you mentioned, it might be an updated driver causing the issue.

I have read something about that, and will check it out this evening, once I've reinstalled the poxy game! :)

I do have my main screen set to 75hz because at 60hz it was causing flicker. But I've had it set like that since I built the pc on Saturday and it's been fine before last night

Made sure pb is updated, did it manually and was all up to date, so don't think that's the issue.

MSI Afterburner causes problems with BF2 if you have that installed.

I don't think I've got it installed, unless it did it automatically when installing graphics card drivers.

It is a a fresh install but I really don't want to have to start from scratch again as I really hate having to set everything up from scratch, especially seeing as windows 7 (which I am new to) just sees to have made everything more difficult/fiddly

Make sure you do try it mate as I had this happen to me (when I had BF2) after the last patch, not sure if it was the widescreen update that messed it up or what, but going into your config (think it was the my documents folder) and opening it with notepad and changing default screen size to whatever you use did the trick and stopped it crashing back to desktop upon starting game. Good luck.
