Hi all, got me BF2 the other week to enjoy with my new 7600gt agp and low and behold what a night mare to get it to run well on my rig. I remember battlefield Vietnam and the day i jumped up and down on the disk it got to me that bad.. not wanting to go down that route with BF2 so decided to implement all tweaks and clear up my system.

Before game I have 21 running processes, 170mb pf/commit. My avg virus scanner is completely disabled. I game at 1024x768, set point enabled for G7 mouse (was thinking of not using set point). During Game i get on av 60 - 75 fps sometimes drops to low 40s when busy. Going into task manager when playing i notice PF usage at around 850mb. Played for 2 hours and finished playing went to T.M. to find Memory commit at. Total 189696, Limit 2519252, Peak 929436

This is what i did:
1 Updated to latest forceware drivers
2 Lowered in game settings to medium, all shadows on low, AA x2
3 In driver control panel i set AA and AF to application control
4 Disabled all intro movies
5 Manually updated Punk buster
6 Set: pb_sleep 500 and pb_writecfg
7 Renamed BF2.exe to BF21.exe set to run on high priority
8 Tried upping the agp aperture size in bios from 128 to 256
9 Tried disabling page file - didn't make a difference..
10 Tried max frames render ahead, 0, 1, 2, 3, settings - difference negligible
11 Set sound to medium and software cos me card aint hardware supported, turned off EAX
12 P4 is hyperthreading so set the affinity to disable the pretend core.

The game is less choppy now. Still not good enough tho - If i turn 180 real fast my cross hair jumps back an inch or so like my mouse movement was to fast for it. You can even see this on the little map top right as my white triangle jumps back a little.. The funny thing is when moving in a boat I can look/scan left to right as fast as i would when on foot without this problem.

I would love to sort this as the game looks real cool. Just can't see me playing it to much as this prob can make my aiming when spinning round impossible. I really can't justify buying 2gb of ddr 400 and can't get 1gb of the geil stuff I have cos they stopped making it - tried fleabay, none on there.. I even tried having all settings on low with no AA and experience the same problem. Sorry to go on - just wanted to give as much info as possible, any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks

More RAM + Decent Graphics card = win

There's no way around the fact that new games require top system specs to yeild top performance. It's up to you whether you think coughing up the dosh is worthwhile, but unfortunately there's no other way around it.

I agree and plan to start a new build next year. I originally thought battlefield 2 only required 2gb for high settings hence my settings. My frame rates within the game are adequate leaving me to believe my 7600gt/P4 combo just enough at the resolution I game at. I tried 2gb of memory from my mate and still had the same prob - game was smoother tho. This problem happens when my fps is as high as 80 and as low as 40 - the frame rate makes no difference. I have no probs with any other games.

Believe me if my mates 2gb of memory solved this problem then i would buy some. Like i said the game was smoother etc. but the cross hair still misbehaved when turning quickly..

Thanks for your input

I've got a spec pretty much on par with yours (amd64 @ 2.4gig, 1gig ram, 6800ultra) and I've found if you run textures on medium, dynamic light/shadow on low and everything else on high, you'll get the best compromise of gfx for perfomance and I haven't had any problems with the game so far :).

There is hope.. I do run the game with all on medium and all three shadow settings on low (lower settings than yours). In one player and 32 bots I get a really smooth game. I can run the game great at your settings.. Problem is when online - it is playable apart from the problem with turning quickly and the corsair jumping back an inch or so. This don't happen on 1 player.

Thanks mate

What's your ping like in-game? You could have packet loss or something seeing it doesnt do it in singleplayer.

If i were you, i'd be looking at your own connection/the servers you play on for the problem.

Thanks Insanity. I get on average 30 - 50 ping on my 4mb cable connection. I updated the drivers for my on board network card and still no joy. I agree that it is something to do with my connection as for servers i have had a dabble on the 50 klicks server, enough people on here seem to go on there. Is there any way I can test out my connection?

This might sound like a random question but have you turned off mouse acceleration in your mouse software?

you could try capping your fps at say 60/70 command is game.lockfps, that might help on maps like jalalabad as i seem to get lower frame rates on that map..

I am using avg free anti virus and zone alarm free. basically I completely disable avg by shutting down the control centre then the resident scanner then i disable all avg processes in task manager. For zone alarm i select Game mode and deny all alerts - i am to scared to disable the fire wall completely.

As for mouse acceleration. I uninstalled set point to see if that was the prob. Windows is running my g-7 at mo... Jacob, If ya don't mind how will capping my frame rate help?

Had a game tonight and found my ping to be really healthy between 15 and 30.

My suggestions are to Bin AVG, Bin ZoneAlarm, Bin Setpoint.
Then download Avast for your AV and use Windows Firewall. This will reduce your running processes no end.
I personally use Avast and WF and have All year with No probs at all. I Personally tried set point and noticed it used 10k and is a load of Crap.
Install Avast, Use Windows Firewall and Bin Setpoint.
Also download a prog called XP Antispy and select suggested and apply once all the above has been done. This will avoid spikes caused by Microsoft data aquisition.

I was running BF2 on a similar system (see sig but replace the 7800 with an ATI 9800XT). One 1gig ram it was slow as hell. On 2gig I could have everything ramped up.

Shame that they patched it into oblivion and I stopped playing, but thats for another thread :D

1.4 runs sweet mate best yet. Game loads up faster, server list is much better and the game plays smoother than ever for most. No disconnections or connection freeze issues either. :)
I've been lucky throughout with my set up and it just seems to like BF2 and has since day one.
I started BF2 with a 3200xp barton 1gig and a 9800XT, then got 2gig of Geil and an X800pro@pe. I'm now on an A64 3500 2 of Geil and a 7800GS+.
All three rigs have run/ran it lovely.
I know others have had problems but since 1.4 most have been resolved.

yeh I was using avast only last week. Decided to change to avg - looks like i am going back to avast... Is the windows firewall any good? I always believed it wasn't up to the task. I binned set point yesterday. Now i am only using 19 processes before the game is started up! I'll try xp anti spy later. once again thanks for the advice everyone!
