BF2 Online and Guns

In single player or online can you unlock guns ? I have the original game brought about 2-4 years ago no addons no mods no packs. Just wondered by playing online do you unlock things? same goes for single player

you cant in sp. in mp you unlock stuff as you kill more people

edit: or get more points, like commander points, medic points resupply, etc
