What are your specs? BF2 is pretty scalable and should run on fairly low spec computers with the right settings.
Also since patch 1.4 most of the major stability issues, like the server crashes have been sorted out. Yes there are small niggles here and there but I don't think they'll get in the way too much as long as you play on a low ping and well administrated server.
