Before I say anything - any posts in this thread that say IGA does this that or the other - provide PROOF (a link is sufficient). Here-say is not constructive.

The paper that started it:

The interview discussing IGA: http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=11300

Essentially the software is 'adware', as featured in numerous shareware applications.

What does the software do?

  • Tracks what adverts you look at, their angle, relative size to player, and duration you looked at it.
  • Provides you with a unique ID that is used to track you later - this ID is not your user ID, or linked to your EA account.
  • Runs only while BF2142 is running
  • Only runs within the game

What does the software NOT do?
  • Steals your identity and purchases access to subscription sites
  • Read your cookies, browser history
  • Run while BF2142 is not running
  • Do anything outside of the game

I think the biggest problem is that consumers are not informaed about this manditory program before purchasing the game.

It really doesn't bother me if it looks at what adverts I've been looking at ingame... Although I doubt I'd spend my playing time on reading adverts

Update by Squarehed in the BF2142 thread:

Greetings,
We would like to provide more information on in-game advertising in Battlefield 2142. To try and help everyone better understand it, here is how it works.

The in-game advertisement is respectful of players' privacy: it never accesses files not directly related to the game, and it does not capture personal data such as cookies, account login detail, gameplay behaviour or surfing history. As it is an integrated part of Battlefield 2142 and not a separate program, it only runs when the game is running.

Because BF2142 delivers ads by region, the IP address of the player is used to determine the region of the player and helps serve ads by region and language; for instance, a player in Paris will be presented with ads in French. Note that this IP address is not stored on the advertisement server and is not repurposed for other uses.

A unique ID number is anonymously assigned the first time the player joins a Battlefield 2142 online game. It is stored locally on the PC but is not linked to any personal details.

The in-game advertisement gathers what we call “impression data”, such as location of the billboard in the game or duration of advertisement impression. It helps see how many people have seen an ad – but not who has seen it.

We are also conscious that the advertisement shouldn’t distract the player from the overall gaming experience, so all ads fit in the unique environment of each level in the game. The content of the ads is also controlled to ensure that no offensive content is displayed in Battlefield 2142.

We all hope that this explanation will address recent concerns on the advertisement in Battlefield 2142.

See you on the Battlefield.

Thanks for giving me this information. I think afterall I will buy the game now.

The fact that the spyware doens't run when BF isn't running has put my mind at ease.

Could anyone tell me if the game is dispatched on Friday, or if I order now, it will be sent out 2moro?

One thought, at the dawn of a new ice age and a starving world in chaos, would there actually be anything left to advertise?

Not exactly realistic is it, 64 battle hardened warriors armed with a devastating arsenal of hi-tech weaponry, including assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, some of the most lethal vehicles known to man. Massive battle Walkers and futuristic aircraft that rule the skies all fighting to the death on the battlefield as some unseen guy nips round with a sponge, some glue and a bunch of posters :p

Yeah, 'cause they totally couldn't have been there before war broke out could they? What were the developers thinking? :p Quick, give them an email and maybe they're realise their over-sight!

If they're the same as SWAT4 they change in game. As you move around the map you'll see different ad's on the same wall each time you get to it. Like a guy with a roll of posters nipped in and put another one up when you wasn't watching.

Haha, that's quite novel! I never knew SWAT4 even had advertisement technology in it :) With any luck, it'll load a new advertisement texture on each map load.

lol that pic is pure class!!

tbh i wont mind relevant adds in games, can only make them more reslistic imho.

As long as it doesnt effect my pings!!! better not

also could you imagine playing say wow, and walking past an ad for a 32" lcd tv lol, would ruin the game, As long as the adds remain relevant to the game its all good,

A car game with a full wonderbra ad wonder where all the crashes will occur :D lol

is this worldwide or just in europe or the US? the reason i ask is because SOE tried something like this in Planetside, but european ips only saw the SOE logo and not the adverts, whilst US ones saw the ads. players eventually worked out how to stop them being shown.

from an advertising point of view you'd want to know who is seeing your ad and where they are. there seems little point in advertising taco bell or whatever across europe as it's US based. just a thought.

It's worldwide - that's the whole idea behind identifying your IP, so you can be served regionally appropriate ads in the right language.

It's the phrase 'megaboards and video streams' that scares me. I'm going to wait for a few screenies before deciding. I wouldn't be too quick to laugh at the mock screenshot just yet :p

so can you destroy the ads..and does the spyware track which adverts you Dont like!

all theyneed to do is have a bird in a bikini on every billboard advertising whatever it is they are advertising and they will ALL get looked..in fact fighting will cease and both sides will just gather round the hoardings
