So. In the latest CGW podcast, they received retail boxed copies of BF 2142.

When you open the box, a big slip of paper falls out first, preceeding any discs or manuals. The slip of paper says, essentially, that 2142 includes monitoring software which runs while your computer is online, and records "anonymous" information like your IP address, surfing habits (probably via cookie scans), and other "computing habits" in order to report this information back to ad companies and ad servers, which generates in-game ads.

Now, I can live with certain in-game ads (though apparently there will be Dodge truck and Neon ads in the bleak, futuristic world of 2142), but including a lengthy description - outside of even the Eula - seems to indicate even EA knows that this is some shady borderline spyware ****. I don't support it and won't be buying 2142 (for a host of other reasons, too).

I think theyve made a big mistake here. everyone is now saying they wont be buying the game and all those that dont will be looking at ET:QW a lot closer

Not to be an idiot because personally i dont mind swearing but there sweary in that quote just thought id say it to save your account.

And what a joke putting spyware in the game EA (& co) are a disgrace and wish people would stop buying there junk.Mostly all there releases have problems and never get fixed aka the dreaded Dual Core bug which they seem to have released in games constantly without fixing. Im not sure if they have now fixed it in BF2 and Most Wanted but there history is full of rush jobs and all about moeny in there pockets not the consumer.

this sucks if right. and i'd take the advice and edit the swearies in the quote and also there are some in the link. this won't last long if you don't (it's a family forum after all).

Early reports saying that this data collector only runs while BF2142 is running (Yay for more system hogging and poor performance /o/) and that it's only collecting data on what ads your looking at in-game.

EA to release statement soon. Think so people need to relax regarding this whole "spyware" cobblers though.

I think the Blizzard thing was checking your PC for WoW specific cheat programs, although I could be wrong.

Was wavering about BF2142 after the so-so demo and all the bugs, I didn't know there'd be in-game ads. Even without the spyware, the ads would stop me getting it.

Don't mind having advertising shoved in my face - it's pretty much everywhere after all, but I'm not going to pay EA for the privilege.

It depends what it does, if it just cheks the adds you visit in game and sends the info back to EA so they can put other adds in etc then I am fine but if it runs at anyother time or sends anything else off about my PC or my habits too anyone it is bad.

Runs like a piece of rubbish on my computer and constantly crashes/disconnects so am gonna give this a miss anyway.

Quakewars here we come.

wasnt there somthing about blizzard and a contract that referd to summit like this
i think your talking about "the warden" it is a anti cheat program that does a scan for known cheats running in the background while WoW is running, it was temporarily accused as spyware after a well know programmer who created the most popular cheats (that now dont work because of Warden) said it collected personal info which was proved false/made up information
