BF3, high ping, and wifi problems

Hi there,

Main problem: dodgy internet connection meaning i can't reliably play BF3.

The Detail:

i have a 70MB virgin broadband connection. Unfortunately my pc is a good distance from the router and i am using a wifi card. In order to boost the wifi signal, i have a 2nd router which is closer and connected to the main router via cable.

Now when i do speed tests i get on average ping: 15 downspeed 30mbps upspeed 8mbps. This does however vary massively throughout the day. Sometimes i get only 2mbps downspeed...nightmare...

My problem right now is the speeds im getting when doing online tests are pretty good, however when i go in game in BF3 my ping might be 40 or 50 and the game is still jumping about all over the place.......and just a few moments ago it has gotten even worse with a ping of maybe 1500 and not even being able to spawn into the game before EA kicks me off the server.

Does anyone know what im doing wrong?....is it something to do with my wifi set up, where it works fine to download stuff...but terrible in a game?

Cheers

But if im getting good speeds when i do a speed test, do i really need an ethernet cable?

And i just tried it in game again...out of game ping 15, in game ping 600 and connection timed out..

Gaming on wifi is like scratching ya ass then sniffing ya finger, u just dont do it!

Get a super long Ethernet cable and run along bottom of ya wall or under ya carpet!

Ok my house mate is using some sort of device he plugs into a socket, which transfers the internet connection through to another device in his bedroom.
Would that be ok to use for gaming?

Homeplugs are not perfect but they are a damn load better than wireless.

Also, speedtest check your latency but are NOT latency sensitive. A dropped packet here or there on wireless will not hugely impact your download speed and will unlikely reflect on a brief latency snapshot but you will certainly notice it in gaming and other latency sensitive applications like Voice over IP and Video Chat.

use a powerline kit i have 1 for my pc upstairs and 1 for the tv, blu-ray, sky and xbox in the lounge amazing things never get high pings or any lag problems

What your mate is using are known as homeplugs. Theese use your existing electrical wiring, theyre much better than wireless, but the quality/age of the electrical wiring in your house will impact on how good they are or wether theyll work at all for you. I tried them, but they wouldnt work at all for me. I had been using a wireless usb adapter, (netgear wpn 111). Absolutely terrible peice of kit, overheated and caused system freezes. Got a big long ethernet cable and routed it round the room, fantastic job.

in our shared house at uni we had a single ethernet cable which went up the stairs, we used some cable tacks to tack the thing out of the way. One single cable from the router downstairs to a 100mb switch we put at the top of the stairs.

There is no substitute for a proper ethernet cable.

Cheers for the replies guys. I might have to invest in one of those homeplugs.

In the meantime...ive grabbed a spare ethernet cable and connect one end to my pc and the other to the 2nd router.... But no internet.....noob time......why isnt it workin?

Was the second router just set up to act as DHCP for wireless? Might be that you're not actually getting an IP assigned over cable on the second router. Do you get an IP assigned?

Gaming over wireless isn't the disaster everyone is saying it is. I game over wireless and always have done. Sure my king might be 2-5 Ms lower but it's still under 50ms to a uk server in BF3. Doesn't stop me getting MVP awards and ace squad pins . My PC is only around 3 metres directly from the Router though.

poor king, maybe a good set of heels can sort that...

Too get this post of the crazy stalker vibe, I too have gamed wireless and only been resorted to using a long Ethernet cable when trying to do so with a dongle :(
Also using the microwave somehow used to knock out the wifi in the house, which isn't great as my brothers only know how to cook if it comes with a cooking time on the package.
