Rig in sig. Want to play BF3 at very high/max settings. Birthday on Oct 17th. Max budget £200. In a caravan on holiday, bad weather. Hit me. Wait for 7000 series?

No-one knows what it will take to run it maxed out. For £200, you could get a 6950 2Gb. Not much else you could upgrade for that budget.

7 series will be out after BF3, so if you want to wait and save, you can. A 6950 would be a nice upgrade over your 5830 though.

What res do you game at?

I game on my 37" lcd and switch between 1920*1080 and 1280*720. Shame its out after the release date, looks like ill have to wait for the 7000 :( Otherwise I do have my eye on a 6950..

Cornwall bud. Couldn't go on hols earlyer due to being broke and moving flat. Weather hasn't been too good but could have been worse :)

I'm thinking is it worth getting two lower spec'd 7000 series cards and going crossfire. E.G two 7770's instead of one 7870?

It depends on the price point, but it should be a better option in terms of performance? The 6 series was meant to scale well so I'm sure the 7 series will be as good if not better.

Does anyone have a rough idea on release prices? Or what the 6000 series prices were at launch?

General rule of thumb is to buy the single most powerful card your budget will allow now, and then Crossfire/SLI in future if you ever need it.

Just my $0.02 though.

Think I'll do that then. Do you think the 7870 will be £200ish?

I wouldn't like to say. I haven't really been following the 7000 series news. I'm sure someone more informed will be able to speculate though :)

As per your price - performance thing, two lower end cards may give better performance in the short term, however if the single card is powerful enough that you don't notice the extra frames from having the two lower end cards (highly likely in 99% of games), then you've left yourself with no upgrade path for no benefit. You can always add a second 7870 down the line when you actually need the extra frames and they're a bit cheaper.

With some games starting to break the 1GB VRAM barrier, it would be nice to have 1.5 - 2GB too, and it's likely the mid-ish range cards will ship with 1GB, and the mid-high end ones shipping with 2GB. Although I could be wrong. I haven't been following it. Merely speculation on my part :p

Another option open to you is to wait for the 7000 series cards, and pick up a 6950/70 or two (would make sense in this instance as you'd be buying two high end cards) used from someone upgrading to a 7000 series card. I imagine retailers will drop 6000 prices to shift them too so...
