BF3 – PC Graphical Options Revealed

Twin 470's can't handle it on ultra? That's mental.

Surely not that surprising though, GTX470-SLI is over 18 months old and has only 1.25GB VRAM. This is a cutting edge game and I'd imagine anyone who wants high fps at high resolution and has a GPU setup worth under £500 (today's prices) will be struggling on Ultra.

I've got a single GTX470 and if I get this game I'd expect to start at 1680x1050 Medium and then tweak a few settings one way or the other (probably turning shadows down, disabling DOF/Blur, and maybe bumping a couple of other setting up if they don't hit performance too much).

To roll out one of my frequent arguments about Crysis, chances are BF3 on "High" will look better than most games on "Ultra", so just pretend Ultra doesn't exist and the High actually means Ultra :)

I'm just not sure which way to go on this.
I game at 1920x1080 with my 5850.
From all the gossip it seems BF3 is optimised for nvidia moreso than AMD?
If so, shall i go 2 x 560(Ti) or, 2 x 6870, or 1 x 6950, budget depending of course.
Not sure about xfiring my 5850 as i've heard the '5' series don't scale too well.

Sorry to slightly hijack, but it may help the OP/others too?

Nah its not 'optimised' for Nvidia.

There are benchmarks out there that show AMD performing better in BF3 than Nvidia.

Its most likely Nvidia have paid money to EA/Dice so they get their logo on the game and get Dice to give out 560ti's as prizes etc etc etc.

This shows AMD performing better. (Note bottom line section at end of article)

Then again, I have learnt from experience, take benchmarks with a grain of salt.

The best benchmark is your own!

I ran Caspian Boarder beta map on ultra @ 1920 x 1200 on my single 580 and it was fine, it looked fkin amazing too. But I read somewhere that the open beta graphical settings were locked? Maybe quality locked, or locked on DX10, I'm not sure and no one seems to be very clear on it.

Its well known that ultra was not ultra and things were missing.

Well yes, define "things". Things didn't do stuff, or did, didn't they.

There was a definite improvement between high and ultra in open beta, but also some speculation that this was only due to post-processing anti-aliasing being enabled.

Either way BF3 on high settings also looked fantastic, if you don't already have a high-end card then I'd advise against getting one. At lest until next year when southern islands and Kepler arrive. Nvidia are promising 3-4 times the performance per watt with Kepler over the current fermi architecture. How much of this is true or not, I have no idea. But I doubt its going to be another bulldozer style fiasco.
