I have the most ancient of rigs...

8800 GTX 768MB
Q6600 @ 3000
GA-965P-DS3
8GB RAM
2x 80GB INTEL SSDs on Marvell SATA III Card
2x 500GB WD Black RAID Striped
Enermax 500W

This gets me by on BF4 at 1680x1050... having the game on the SSDs helps a lot!

What would be the best bang for buck replacement card that wouldn't run like a room heater... and would give me a significant increase in playability? BF4 and Diablo III are my current games.

Yeah we need budget. But 280X is a good suggestion and a very good card for the money at that res.

Can a 500W PSU handle a 280X and an overclocked Q6600?

Just tossing it out there, but a cool, low power option would be a 750Ti. It's 'basic', but still going to be a significant boost on an 8800 and should do OK at modest resolutions.

A 280X even with mantle will still be bottlenecked by the q6600. And as was said above, an old 500w PSU isn't gonna be happy powering them both. I would say go for a 270 or 270x.

Because of your CPU you will get very low Minimum FPS, you really don't want that, you should go for an R9 270 in that price range. not only is it faster than the 750TI, you can also use Mantle with it.

A CPU bottleneck causes low minimum FPS, Mantle reduces the CPU bottleneck by a lot, it brings those minimum FPS up by a very significant amount resulting in a much smoother and better gaming experience.

500 Watt is more than enough.

Surely he would already be getting very low minimums on his current setup anyway.

I would also suggest a 280x as a middle of the road card, mantle will help a fair bit on the CPU bottleneck.

500w is plenty for that setup.

Also glad to see the 8800GTX trooping on, card was amazing back in the day and I absolutely loved mine

budget would be good to know :) if he's on the lower side of budget 270x; mantle and he'll see a great improvement. Higher budget....280X....even better improvement and when he wants to upgrade the rest of the system aka cpu; mb and memory he can move that over for longer than the 270X....

Either one will be the choice.....280X will last longer.....but cost more

Thanks for all the answers chaps; very, very helpful
I didn't specify a budget as I just needed to know what was out there.

A 280/ is now looming in my future. Will report fps and eye candy changes.

Ta.

Forgot to respond.... I got a HD7950 CDII 3GB to replace the old 8800 GTX. Enabled Mantle... and went from Low in all Settings to High in all settings on BF4. Pulls a respectable 60fps+

Q6600 lives on... and with winter coming... it still doubles as a handy room heater.
