BFBC2 - push GPU and CPU harder than other apps?

So I have had 2 experiences that make me think that BFBC2 pushes my systems harder than other apps that I have used - including my stability testers (prime95, ibt, furmark, heaven2.0).

First case - hd5850 OC's to 950/1300 at 1.187V. Stable in all games, and stress tests, but when I started to play BFBC2 I got gpu failure (recovers, but sometimes GSOD). I new immediately this was a gpu problem. I downclocked the gpu to 850/1200 - no more problems.

Second case - random CTD on another system with q9400 OCd to 3.6. System was 12h prime stable (blend) and ibt stable. Thought it couldn't be the OC given the results of the stress tests and given their were no previous instabilities in other games. Tried all manner of drivers, OS re-install, then finally downclocked to 3.4Ghz - problem solved.

I'm thinking that this game stresses gpu and cpu at the same time in such a way that stress testing gpu and cpu separately will not reveal if they are stable together.

So I guess I think it would be good if someone could write a BFBC2 base stress test / benchmark!

Thoughts?

ive had stability problems with BFBC2 with a 5850, tryed a few things including down clocking my 5850, driver updates etc seems to be ok for now though.

When i overclock my 5770 to 980/1200 it crashs on every game except bc2. Wish i could say the same for my cpu. I can have it stable on 4.2ghz (corei5) but the only time my pc locks up is on bc2

Ive posted this a few times but despite my system being rock solid (as per sig) on Prime and LinX it used to randomly CTD in BF:BC2.

At stock I didnt have one incident and after much tweaking and faffing about it turned out that it was the RAM. It was running at 1600 linked to the 4.2 OC on the CPU - After reducing the multuiplier so it runs at 1250 (IIRC) i havent (*touches wood*) had one CTD or lock up

I agree that this game really does stress your setup

Cracking game too :D

Might be a long shot but I've found if I use sleep mode and the awake the pc any voltage adjustments I made with the gpu before entering sleep are reset to default, thus making your GPU overclock that was dependent on the higher voltage unstable.

I use hotkeys in Afterburner now to quickly re-apply my overclocking settings and thus my voltage after sleep.

one of my friends had FPS droping issue on his core duo 8500 oc @ 4Ghz in the end volting it up more seemed to fix the problem..

All his othergames were fine till BFBC2 so.. :)

This game is by no means dual core friendly in my opinion. It absolutely stresses my setup to death when I play it for any period of time. e7400 @ 3.75GHz. My gpu doesn't seem too phased by it however, might be due to fps limitations from cpu.

So you think its the bugs that cause the instabilities on my systems rather than the overclocking? That is to say, if these bugs are addressed then I will be able to restore my OCs that are itb, prime95 and furmark stable?

It's certainly a very stressful game on your system. The reason I feel that this causes issues with people's overclock is because both the gpu and cpu are fully stressed simultaneously rather than one or the other in IBT and furmark.

The only bugs I can see in BC2 are in the weapon and team balancing issues, and possibly the reportedly slow loading times. Interesting how a game that fully stresses PC's is being labelled as buggy, just like Crysis was. If your PC is crashing then it's OC is not stable, don't blame the game.

It could be game bugs but also bear in mind games such as BC2 stress both the CPU & GPU at the same time.

You can't test CPU & GPU separately and expect them to be as stable when used together (due to extra heat and power draw).

If you want to emulate a game situation loop 3DMark Vantage with Prime95 running in the background.

The easiest way to find out if it's bugs or overclocking related is to reset everything back to stock speeds and see if it still does it.

Try setting the 5850 fan to a fixed speed.

I only bother over clocking my 5850 to the max catalyst allowed values and have my oc profile with the fan speed fixed at 40%. Playing bfbc2 the other night I wanted to keep my PC quiet so I left the oc on but set the fan to auto so it was quieter. After a short while bfbc2 crashed which is the first time this has happened to me (since 2 weeks after release). Setting fan back to 40% all was well. I need a new case as it gets hot in there.

Mate, have you played it? If you had, or read the forums, people with ridculous spec PCs have the same issues, and they are not overclocked.

Its just down to release bugs.
Common problems: White screen, Black Screen, Audio loop, CTD for no reason.

That, and the mouse wheel problem a few people I know (myself included) get where it selects the wrong weapon, which really gets on my nerves. I only get the odd CTD but it is a bit irritating.

Thats a bug, when you press shift (run) the mouse wheel inverts.
When you stand still it is the right way around :)

Dont see the problem here im running it at

1920x1080 Everything on max except AA and im getting min 35 max 70 FPS no crashes and this is with a [email protected] and a 5850 with the little CCC overdrive turned on.

Granted its not a solid 60fps but steady mid 40's is more than enough.

my system seem to run fine, I had few CTDs but nothing serious.

Yeah, I've been playing it since release and had problems with it crashing etc. Lower clocks, increased voltages a little and all is good. This has been the solution for most people here, including quite a few in this thread I see.

Just because people run at stock and have problems doesn't make it the games fault, unless the makers come out and acknowledge. It's just as possible that their system is unstable at full load on all components even though it's at stock, has a driver problem with some other component etc.

Now that is a bug I wish they would fix! Unless of course they have done it on purpose. :p
