Hey all,

My PC gave up the ghost this week so I've had to build a new one, ordered all the parts from here today to build tomorrow all being well.

My worry is that my new system won't be noticeably quicker than the old one, especially the graphics card.

Old card was an Athlon XP2800+ and an ATI Radeon 9800XT AGP and the new machine (due to budgetary constraints) is being built with a BFG 7600GT OC PCI-Ein it (CPU Athlon X2 4200 on an Asus Nforce 4 board). Has anyone any experience of these cards and their relative performance? Am I going to be disappointed when I get it up and running?

You should notice quite a boost in games, a 7600 GT from a 9800 XT jumps over at least 1 range of cards!

Just out of interest, whu did you go for AMD over Intel?

That is a fine gfx card, you should have no problems. :)

First off welcome to the forums :)

And to answer your question, compared to the previous set up you will be noticing a vast difference :) which is great for you. Despite the 9800XT being great in its day it was far behind the 68xx generation and obviously that moved onto the 7xxx range! So no you wont be disappointed with the set up as the 7600gt is a great card in its own right and as I said there will be a noticable difference in the speed!

Now you say the system is being built, is the gfx card purchased already I take it? If not there are better deals out there like the x1950pro for like £129 and that is a stonking card performance wise

Hi, thanks for the warm welcome and fast replies. :)

The system's already about to leave the warehouse afaik, but my prime concern was trying to keep reasonable levels of performance over my old (unexpectedly dead as of 2 days ago) system without breaking the bank and trying to stay in a budget as best I could, I can ill afford a new PC right now so I've tried to cut cost corners while not sacrificing huge amounts of performance where possible.

I chose AMD over Intel as I've had AMD CPUs in my last few systems and I understand the FSBs, etc, and matching memory speeds far more as I've kept relatively in the loop. The Intel Core Duo CPUs and their interfaces, CPU sockets, etc all baffle me as I haven't looked at an Intel CPU since the Pentium 2 so I'm MANY generations behind on that knowledge.

Just a case of going with what I know I guess, hope I haven't just made a huge mistake in my haste to get a system up and running!

I'll be honest with you and say that I play very few games right now with my primary focus being as one of the sad masses playing World of Warcraft. I run that at 1280 x 1024 on a 19" TFT via DVI (or at least I did before something went *pop*). If I do venture into any other games it's sometimes Black & White 2 and Far Cry, that's about it for now I'd say. I'm not what you'd consider a hard core PC gamer as I don't get the time, but I wanted to build a PC that will run to a pretty good standard and not break the bank.

I'm hoping that running the above my system should cope just fine... Oh, it's got 1Gb of 800Mhz DDR2 and a 320Gb S-ATA II drive to complete it, just for peripheral information.

It'll all be fine for what you wanna use it mate, and the AMD's are good processors in their own right, my bro has a 4600+x2 in his machine and it runs damn well with his 7950GX2! I like AMD myself and got a bit confused with the motherboards ram etc when moving to Core 2 Duo but worked out fine for me!

You'll enjoy your new rig and no need to worry about the game(s) your gonna play on it cos they'll run just fine.

Good job that cos I just got shipping confirmation... :D

Thanks for all the help and reassurance folks, very much appreciated. Subject to everything turning up ok and working I expect I'll use OCUK again as I'm so far impressed with the price, prompt shipping, and community.

Cheers all!
