BFG 7800GT OC

Worth it though :)

Wait for the new zalman/arctic graphics coolers. You will end up spending 50-60£ on air good cooling but it is better than £160 for fairly basic water cooling

Yeah, thinking that as well.

Put the £100 towards a new monitor. What am i saying, i dont even have the £100!

Have you any idea when the Excellaro X1 is out?

I've emailed then asking, but not joy :(

Air cooling solution:

Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro £20
Akasa AK-183-L2B Ultra Quiet 120mm Fan £10

A choice of either:

Zalman ZM-NB47J Northbridge Cooler £5

Or

Akasa AK-210 £5

Problem there is will the asaka fit under my GFX card, if not, will i be able to bend the Zalman around it properly. For the sake of £5, i might buy both TBH.

And either the

Artic Cooling £20

NV Silencer 5 (Rev. 3)

Or.

Accelero X1 £25

Depends on how long i can wait for the Accelero really.

All in all, about £60 inc del.

Thats a review of the ATi version, out end of feb in the US... i was a bit off

The akasa should fit, but i am not sure what it is like noise wise, you would probably have the bend the zalman to get a card to fit.

For the cooler, I would wait for the new arctic or get a zalman as they are easier to fit/little quiter and cool as well as the current arctics

Yeah, i've read that review a couple of time, didn't notice the release date mind.

I think i can hold on TBH, want to read up more on the OCing of the CPU first.

Its just the Freezer keeps on goign on special, then back up. It was £11 about 2 weeks ago, then back up to £22, then now at £15, its making me itching to get it when its low.

Here's a pic of where my GFX hangs.

I also have a problem with the power cable, its too short to the mobo.

With the artic, will it make a difference, here's how i've got it at the moment, as you can see, very stretched.

Totally un-impressed with the layout of me mobo.

The positioning of the power cable, the NB, and where the sound for the DVD drive plugs in, tucked right under my GFX card, had to remove it to hook it up.

Also, do you see the little daft fan where all the audio inputs are, is it necessary to have that running, or is it just another thing to make noise?

Could it be replaced, and is that what the 4cm fans out there are for?

Yeah, the layout is a bit naff...

The cooler shouldnt affect the main power cable, should go just as it is now.
I have the "daft little fan" on a fan controller @ 7v because it is very whiny/loud and havent had any problems.
As for the northbridge thats one of the better placements, it is lower tham most meaning the zalman might actually fit without bending anything

You fill me with some hope there.

Was thinking, take away the fin parts, which wont be there on the Zalman, then you have the real size of the zalman, am i right?

So basically where the two screws are, not much past there, which is just about where the GFX hangs.

The Zalmans fins also grade down at the edges, so less may need to be bent.

I've heard that most snap off the little ones, so the big ones can move, more surface for it to cool.

Also wondering if there's any GPU coolers out there that would blow cool air directly onto the fins, for where its positioned, or would the problem be hot air blowing onto it?

Erm, the zalman graphics cooler blows air in every direction which would help a little. and yep, the zalman is about the size of the fan part, and has little bits sticking out for the screws, so slightly smaller than you thought.

Sold.

Zalman NB it is then.

One last question.

Will this require a MOBO removal? (underpins screws etc)

I dont think the Freezer should require it.

The freezer doesnt, but im not certain about the northridge. I would have thought so to remove the old cooler.

Heres a pic of the arctic pro so you know what way round it goes and what the clearence is like

So that's basically the same setup as mine, bar a freezer & a new case fan.
Is it a lot quieter?

I cannot decide whats making the noise in my comupter.

I know the case fan rattles a bit, but something in there just whirs away at a very loud level.

Diferent case (super lanboy) similar though.

With mine it was the rear fan and the little 40mm fan making the most noise, I solved that with a £4 fan controller i had lying around (from elsewhere) and now have them running at 7volts rather than 12.
The front fan is very quiet anyway and i use speedfan to control the cpu fan, run it @ 70% most the time. It is silent at that speed.

The noisiest thing is my graphics card fan @ 100% (very very loud) but it rarely goes above 50%. I can't say I have noticed the northbridge but then i havent tried lowering it's speed either

I have not read the entire thread, but for reference my BFG 7800GT at 500/1200 ticks over at about 58-62C full load (after an hour of css or bf2).

Yeah, highest i have seen mine was 51 I think. They don't run hot but the coolers can be very noisey

Yeah, am looking at the Artic Freezer pro 64, but am getting sidetracked by the Alphacool kit.

Does that still exhaust the heated air upwards, i.e. into the PSU in a standard configuration?

I'm extremely pleased with the Akasa EVO 120 I have. Expensive, but on mininum speed it's by far the quietest cooler I've heard. Or, rather, not heard. I even believe Akasa's claim of 15dBA for it. Yet it keeps my A64 with a 25% o/c to 43C maximum. Idle is 7C above ambient. As added extra, it exhausts out the back and I'm confident that I can have it serving the dual purpose of case exhaust, to reduce noise further (once I sort this bloody graphics card out - with that hoover inside, all other noise sources are irrelevant).

I'm glad I popped in here. I didn't know about the forthcoming Accelero X2. Daft name, but they could call it something really daft with that performance. I'd even buy it if it was called Fatal1ty! :)

Well, that's made my decision about buying a third-party cooler to quiet down my hoover-7800GT (the fan speed is stuck at 100%, it's quite farcical). None of the ones available now and I'll carry on wearing my headphones. The card's fan is clearly audible through full-ear padded headphones, but they muffle it to a reasonable level. I'll wait. Even stuck at 100% fan speed, the Accelero seems to be quiet enough.

Well if Artic are to be believed, around a quarter of the noise the current stock fan makes, which would be great.

So really, at 100% the X1 would be like having the 7800GT stock at 25%, which sounds great.
