Hi, quick question(s):

What is my natural progression with my current card?

Is it straight to 8800 or can i go 8600 (or will that be a slower x10 ready card)?

Also which are on top ATI or Nvidia?

Ta.

depends on the rest of your spec tbh

im due a full system upgrade early next year so from a 7800gt i went to a 7950 gx2 which i got cheap cheap

depends on what you need /want it for

A natural upgrade from a 7800GT would be to a 8800GTS. As you say, the 8600GT/S is simply a slower DX10 card. Nvidia are pretty much dominating the GPU market at the moment. What resolution are you playing at? This will determine whether you should go for a 320MB or 640MB 8800GTS.

I went from a pair of BFG 7800gt's to an EVGA Superclocked 8800gts 320mb at 1280x1024 and it is way faster than the sli'd 7800's. On top at the mo is Nvidia but it sort of goes like this at the top end:-

NV 8800 Ultra
NV 8800 GTX
ATI 2900XT **
NV 8800GTS 640mb **
NV 8800GTS 320mb

**It is debatable which one of these is better as some benchmarks have the 2900XT on top and some have the 8800GTS 640mb on top.

As to the 8600GTS, i am not sure where this fits in but it does have DX10 capability if you have Vista. Probably somewhere around a 7900GTX in performance but i am sure someone can correct that if it's wrong. The 8500GT is hopeless and not worth considering for gaming. The problem with the 8600 series is that they are restricted by a 128 bit memory bus.

Ok, cheers lads, to sum up your questions:

I'm upgrading my system to: (22/07)

Q6600
Geil Ultra DDR2 2GB PC6400
Gigabyte P35C-DS3R

I've got a Samsung 226BW @ 1680 x 1050 (if possible)

The BFG 7800GT isn't struggling at all, its just i thought i might as well all jump at once.

Another problem is i'm selling more current core (64 3700, mobo 2GB GeiL) to a friend, but he's also need a GFX card, so i either sell him this one and get a new one, or buy him a similar card off MM and wait a while until x10 becomes more common.

Also am on XP, and i don't see much of an option to jump to Vista in the near future.
