just added another 9600gt to my setup (msi p6n platinum e6400 2 gb ram xp home) all seemed ok but as soon as I try to run any games the machine locks up and I have to restart the pc. Installed latest drivers, enabled sli in the control panel, system details shows 2 9600 gt, psu is thermaltake toughpower 700w
Help!!!

yes, when I first went into enable sli it kept reverting back to disabled status so I removed the drivers and reinstalled. After this it took the sli setting. I first went into HL2 lost coast to get a frame rate on the video test, it locked up, rebooted and went into Oblivion which loaded and ran for about 20 sec then locked up again.

I had a single 9600GT, some games it was fine and others it locked up. it locked up online aswell just browsing, that was faulty video memory.
try the card on it's own as suggested.

Ok sorted it by removing the most up to date drivers and installing older ones from disk. No stable but no real improvement in performance - hl2 lost coast exactly the same frame rate as a single card.

I ran lost coast video stress at the default settings (1280 x 1024, no aa or any enhancements) and it ran at 113 fps.

Then maxed out everything (1680 X 1050, 6X AA etc) and ran again - 112 fps!?!

Does this mean I'm CPU limited ( e6400 c2d)?
