PLEASE SEE MY LAST POST ON HERE!!!!

Hi,
I sent my 9800 gx2 back to BFG in wales as an RMA. They are returning to me a "BFG GTX 280 OC".
Is this a fair swap?
I presume they have to send the same card or one that is of it's equal.
What do you think guys? Is this a fair swap or should I question it?
Thanks a lot.

Stu.

P.s BFG are great with their RMA procedure, really impressed.

There are a few instances where the 9800GX2 outperforms the GTX 280...but yes it's a fair swap. As you increase resolution and AA the 280 will come out on top.

The 280 is not only an overall better card, but doesn't rely on SLI and also has a higher resale value.

You should be pleased.

The RMA policy specifies you'll receive a card of roughly equal power to the broken one, so yeah, a 280 is fair. More memory, more bandwidth = win

Wow, thanks a lot all. Very informative. Happy now!!!! :)

Why is the 280 not available to buy? As I was thinking of sli'ing it.

280s went EOL at the beginning of the year when they were replaced with the GTX285....which is also just about to or just has gone EOL.

You get more VRAM as well with the 280GTX - aswell as improved image quality and improved internal color precision. Except in a few titles where SLI scaling is very good it will be faster - in most cases you will have the benefit of not having to rely on SLI scaling to get good performance.

Well, sounds like I should be pleased with the replacement. Just one last question.
Now my 9800 gx2 has been RMA'd and I have a 280, does my warranty carry on as it was? As I have tried to register the new card on BFG website and it says invalid serial but recognises card with other number?
Thanks.

Okay, received my card installed it and guess what? It wont work. All powers up fine, windows boots etc, but fan wont turn/spin at all, just "jumps" every now and then.
Plugged everything in , 6pin and 8 pin, tried other pci-e slot but still the same. Bloody great!!!
The card itself doesnt look new though, it has slight scrapes underneath on the vents and the screws look as though they have been removed before, so could be refurbished from another RMA???
Who's the guy on here who works for BFG who may help with this? Anyone point me in his direction please?
Looks like another 3weeks or so with me old trust 8400 for now :(
Thanks.

what a waste. Why send a card all the way from illinois usa , which doesnt work. Surely they should test 100% if they are working?
Mine is not new by the look of the card which I am not happy about as it is obviously an RMA from the past.
The fan spins freely by finger touch, but just "flicks" on the startup and running of pc.

Can I keep that please Rroff :D

not quite sure how you interpreted that... multi GPU scaling generally averages around 60-70% but in some titles you get 90+% scaling... in those cases the 9800GX2 would be faster than a 280GTX unless it was VRAM limited... in other cases it would be a bit slower.

I should be getting my BFG RMA back on monday... so I'll have an opinion then heh...

Have you tried both outputs on the card?

Sounds like its gonna have to go back tho :( I'd insist on it being dealt with through the welsh place as well...

Yes , I have tried both slots in my machine, get picture and boot up but fan not spinning , just flinching every now and then.
I have got another RMA from phoning America (me phone bill is gonna be huge) and sending it tomorrow back to wales to try again.
Let me know what you RMA'd and what you get in return, if used?
Is yours coming from U.S.A too?
cheers.

So he would be better off with the 9800gx2 then.
