I recently bought The Baldurs Gate compilation. I've never played these games before.

Would I be better off installing BG Tu Tu to play Baldur's Gate 1 or should I as a first time player experience it the way it was originally intended?

There are mods that do nothing other than allow you to play in higher resolutions, use the BG2 interface in BG1, that sort of thing. I'd get them, they don't change the game as such.

Stay away from gameplay mods and add-ons and stuff until you've played the game through though, it's good enough as it stands.

TuTu is probably the way to go, as BG1 did look terribly last century when I revisited it a few months ago. Any changes to game play will be minor and sympathetic to the original release. After all, it was made by a bunch of rabid fanboys. :D

Play it vanilla tbh.

TuTu doesn't handle all the textures very well. One i remember is when you get butterflies and squirrels etc, it doesn't render the backgrounds of the sprites. Instead it just puts them in a black square. Kind of irritating for me to see a black square with a butterfly in skip across the screen.

It does make improvements, for sure... but it just seems so unfinished, and that annoys me.

I wouldn't bother with TUTU either for a first play though.

make sure to install bg1 and tosc.
then also install the baldurdash fixpack which fixes bugs left over from the last bioware patch.
