Hi guys,

I'm soon to be moving to a new house, my work is about 10 minutes away if I rode to work so I'm on the lookout for a bike. My budget is limited as I'll purely only use it bike for and back from work, no off-roading etc, just road use.

What kind of bike should I look for? Mountain bike? I'm 6"3 so what kind of frame and wheel size should I look for? Is £100 a decent budget to get what I need?

Thanks,

Andy

I would recommend for your needs going to as good a bike shop as you can find (typically NOT a Halfords). Describe what you will be doing and they should be able to find you some thing new. Importantly, they will fit you to it. Even if its only 20 mins to work, 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week for some months or years could give you knee problems if you dont get a good fit.

Beyond that I would simply recommend a specifically designed commuting bike or non-suspension mountain bike with slick tires that are as narrow as you are comfortable with. If the tire has a really soft compound and feels almost as soft as a rubber you might rub out pencil marks with; the tire can be slick. If its fairly hard; there should be some tread pattern to it that will give you better traction on wet roads

I am not sure but £100 might be enough. If you do end up going to Halfords, it would probably be better to spend as little as possible in anticipation of costs after the purchase. At which point it might be simpler to get a new bike...

Check out http://www.evanscycles.com/foyer.jsp. Expect to pay more than £100 there though. If you can possibly avoid it, DO NOT GET A FULL SUSPENSION mountain bike. It will be a miserably inefficient ride and you certainly do not need suspension for roads unless yours have a huge pothole every 10 metres!
