Hello all,

I'm now cycling in to work and I'd like to minimise the risk of punctures. I've bought a bottle of 'Slime' from Halfords ages and ages ago and I've just read the back and it says you need an applicator after cutting the top off the bottle to allow you to put the slime in to the inner tube. Does anyone have this slime applicator or tubing I need?

Now, on my bike it isn't the standard valves. It's like a stalk that has a nut on that screws around. You undo the nut and push the stalk to deflate the tyre.

I know it's a real long shot but I figured someone might have it lurking about somewhere. Obviously I'll slip a bit of £ and postage costs covered.

Cheers,

I think you mean a Schrader (car type) valve. The valve unscrews so you can take it right out and pour the slime in then screw the valve back in.

The slime is designed for bicycle inner tubes or tyres. You can get inner tubes pre filled with slime, but I want to make use of this bottle I already have from a while ago. It also says on the back that you can use them on car tyres, you just put more in.

I'll try and find a pic of the valve I mean, you can't unscrew the valve from the inner tube. My bike is a MTB btw :)

The nut that you unscrew makes it a presta valve which is fairly standard for bicycle tyres (due to higher pressure i think).

tbh this slime stuff sounds like a bit of a waste of time. Get yourself some decent tyres with a kevlar belt in, make sure you keep them inflated to the recommended pressure and, most importantly, watch where you are going and avoid cack on the road especially glass!

I remember having this slime in my old bike and it worked a treat. Either that or was very lucky.

I got it ages ago so was just thinking I might as well make use of it whilst it's lying about instead of splashing out on new tyres / inner tubes etc. I'm guessing theres no other way to apply the slime without this applicator?

The applicator can't be much more than a valve adaptor. Can't you just pop to halfords and see if they have one or get another can of slime?
I never bothered with it personally, just carried a puncture repair kit although nothing would've fixed my last puncture as a flint cut the tyre in half when I landed from a drop off.

What about 'solid' inertubes? they're made of a kind of honeycombe foam stuff... lots of tiny trapped air bubles; meant to be almost indestructable as far as punctures go. Not seen any in a while though.

dont think the ride is as comfortable/'direct' with the foam tyres

The slime stuff is a load of crap if you ask me. Was riding home once and got a puncture........didnt stop it going down and the green **** it put everywhere on my bike wasnt exactly tasty either

Just use decent tubes and have decent tyres.

Well, been looking around wiggle.co.uk and after they made me purchase £50 worth of gear I checked the slime stuff out. You can't fill up presta valves using the bottles. Oh well, I'll use it on my Mums bike instead.
