Big bang build

Hi Overclockers,

I'm doing my first big build for a number of years and have convinced myself that it deserves a budget of £2500-3000.

The machine will be used almost exclusively for games. My existing rig has been starting to creak for the last couple of years so I started keeping a list of games I want to play (preferably at the highest possible detail) when my new one got built. AAA Games like:

Witcher 3
Far Cry 4
Watch Dogs
GTA V
Shadows of Mordor
Batman: Arkham Knight
Dragon Age: Inquisition

Before I dive headlong into buying components, the excitement of bolting them all together and finally pressing that power button for the first boot (with fingers crossed), I'd like to get some opinions.

I obviously want to get the best performance in terms of level of detail and FPS, but don't have the knowledge to see whether I am overpowering/spending or bottlenecking the rig in any particular area.

Here's what I have so far:

YOUR BASKET
1 x OcUK GeForce Titan X 12288MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £839.99
1 x Asus PG278Q ROG Swift 27" G-Sync 144Hz Gaming Widescreen LED Slim Bezel Monitor - Black/Red £629.99
1 x Intel 5820K 3.30GHz (Haswell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor - OEM (CM8064801548435) £305.99
1 x GeIL Super Luce 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-27200C16 3400MHz Quad Channel Kit - Blue (GLB416GB3400C16AQC) £239.99
1 x Gigabyte X99-Gaming 5P Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 ATX Motherboard £229.99
1 x Samsung 500GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E500B/EU) £155.99
1 x CM Storm Stryker Full Tower Gaming Case - White £139.99
1 x EVGA SuperNova G2 1000W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £134.99
1 x Corsair Hydro H100i High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (CW-9060009-WW) £98.99
Total : £2,775.90 (includes shipping : Ex.VAT).

I'd love to get an opinion on gaming keyboards/mice. I've had wireless ones but occasionally get drop outs or looping keypresses even though the receivers for both are very close to the units. So I'm thinking I'll head back to wired.

Appreciate your help in advance!

Cheers,
LoZ

Damn you're quick on the draw stulid!

Thanks for the reply - I think they do a white version of that Phanteks case which looks nice so maybe I'll swap that in. Is the CoolerMaster Full Tower really too small to fit the H110i?

I notice that you've swapped out the RAM too, is that to keep the price approximately the same, or because there's no discernible difference between the 2666MHz and 3400MHz memory?

Cheers,
Loz

I swapped the RAM as its still quick, red to match the board.

There is red LED Geil Super Luce 3000Mhz.

I looked at the fan configuration for the coolermaster and it says stuff like 1 200mm fan in the roof etc. I just know the Phanteks fit all sorts of rads etc and clear the heatsinks on the board+ram.

In which case, re: the RAM, I've just switched over to a red set. Same price.

Thanks for the advice on the case vs. the H110i.

Here's what I have currently. Are there any other opinions on where I need to improve, or indeed where I might have gone overboard with one particular component?

Also, appreciate any recommendations for keyboard/mouse gaming combo.

Ta!

Stick to 3000Mhz RAM, I think its safer and does less messing around with the bclk to get the RAM multiplier that high.

Do you want a mechanical keyboard?

Okay, thanks for that info - shaves off £40:

Do you want a mechanical keyboard?

To be honest I have no particular preference. I'm interested to hear the views of gamers on here as to what's good and what's not.
I've heard lots of chatter about mechanical keyboards over the last couple of years - do they actually add anything to your gaming experience?

Mechanical keyboards are epic, you get such a nicer feel to every letter you type and more confidence that you have pressed a key.

I would recommend maybe dropping to a 850W PSU dont necessarily need a 1k for your build could just a save you a few pennies. other than that looks like a great selection you wont be disappointed.

And Amen to stulid highly recommend a mechanical keyboard !

I should have mentioned, I was thinking about leaving it open for a 2nd Titan X in a couple of years time when performance started to drop off. That's why I went for the 1KW. But maybe that would be underpowered for 2? Is the MoBo big enough?

Well that's two solid recommendations - any brand/model in particular?

sure if you are planning on a second titan x in the future keep the 1k.

i personally use a steel series 6gV2 it uses cherry mx black had it for something like 3 years now cant fault it you could put this keyboard in a car crusher and it would live haha, but as for brands i believe ducky are very well known and respected it does come down to personal preference though, looks LED, RGB all that and of course the key type.

Might be worth popping into a PC shop and testing out the various switches

Reds are supposed to be good for gaming, browns a sort of hybrid between typing and gaming, but everyone has a personal preference at the end of the day

Thanks for all of your feedback guys - I'm going to get ordering the components and while I wait for them to come through I'll check out the keyboard situation.
