Big Bang Theory

Trust me, it was loud - Hyper psu and NEC drive.

P.s You need another hobby - a post count of 230 in a couple of weeks

Genius! :D
Last time I heard anything like that from my computer sparks flew out of the PSU.. Might have been a Hyper as well..

Some people need new rigs quick ;)

That happened to me a few years back, my DVD drive started spinning up extremely fast and then it came out with a loud "cracking" sound and when I opened it the disc was in shards!

Those happen occasionally, some slight defect in disc from manufacturing or from handling (some CD/DVD cases make you fear for the safety of disc) can start to cause small crack which can weaken disc considerably.

This reminds me of a problem with Samsung (I think) drives a good 6 to 7 years ago that suffered a problem with munching CDs. Had to have all the CDROM drives in our PCs at work changed just in case one exploded. Cannot remember the exact problem but there was a tendency for the CD to become unbalanced while spinning in the drive and either explode or fly out of the drive, I guess like oddjob's hat in Goldfinger. Never heard of it happening at work though but they replaced the drives just in case.

Suspect your original psu is fine, but I'd have blamed that first too. This is not unheard of, though I have not experienced it myself.

Now that's a problem even Microsoft's latest service patch won't be fixing. :p

Not to make you feel any less special or take anything away from you, but I've actually had that happen to me once before as well. Well not with XP, but with a copy of Command and Conquer: Generals. I thought the game had introduced some sort of new dynamic to the explosions and I literally jumped out of my seat. My drive refused to eject, but I took it apart to find fragments of disc.

Happened to me a few weeks ago, disk had been used since XP was first released. Totally destroyed the drive and went with a nice big bang that scared everyone in the house :)

I was going to post about the mythbusters testing.

Could a failing psu out more voltage through the drive making it spin faster? If not then you need to be storing your discs a bit better

Happened to my Age of Empires III disc. Took me ages to get all the tiny little pieces out of the drive. I tried reconstructing the disc on the outside to try and make sure there wern't any still left :p Last thing I wanted was for another disc to get all scratched up by something still left inside.

mate had an msi do that that once years back his pc was sittin ontop of the desk next to him when it went said he'd never been more scared
