"Better" hubs will have better seals to keep all the crud out, run smoother and longer through poor conditions, be lighter for thier given strength.

Example: I used to be forever stripping my LX rear hub to clean it, I even bent the axle. My Hope XC hub has done 2 years running through winter before needing looked at.

I use WHATEVER I TAKE OFF THE SHELF AT WORK ;)

Muc off then a rinse down. Get the brushes on the cassette and chain, degrease and lube......grease up whatever needs greased and give it a good check over.

well im back from the lakes. it was amazing didnt really want to come home. went out for a ride with the locals and it got very dark. me and my mate didnt have lights so we were riding round a forest with some of the other riders behind so we could see where we were going. was a brilliant ride. much better than the ones we did by ourself because they knew all the little routes.

the bikes took a bit of a battering from the rocks wich are everywhere. slightly buckled front wheel which isnt to bad.

and i only managed to fall of once i was expecting more. rode over a mound onto some peat and the front went into it up to the forks. i went over the bars. luckily it didnt hurt as i had a nice sot landing.

well worth a visit for anyone keen in mtb

Just about to pick this bike up, a Shogun Paranoid. Been looking for a decent bike for the last 3 months. This is my first MTB, my 18 year old Raleigh 12spd road bike is nearing the end of its life and I wanted something decent for the winter's 60mile a week commute around Hull. I didn't expect to get hydraulic disc brakes for under £300. The spec looks ok:-

Fork: SR Suntour XCT alloy suspension fork with a disc mount and pre load adjuster

Frame: Alloy 6061 series, hexagonal tapered main tubes, square seat stays with mega oversize chainstays, semi integrated head tube.

Gears: Shimano Acera 24 speed with Shimano Alivio STI control levers.

Cranks: SR Suntour XCT-252 triple 22/32/42T with alloy crank and chainring chainguard

Wheels: Weinmann ZAC-2000 26” alloy double wall rims with 32 hole quick release alloy disc hubs and Shogun 26” x 2.30” tyres.

Brakes: Front and rear hydraulic disc brakes.

Steering: Tioga semi integrated headset, alloy Ahead stem with Tioga alloy riser handlebars.

Looks ok, to me but I am no expert.

Just got the bike home and noticed the front fork are not as in the spec, they are upside down Mozo USA Groove forks. Done a steady five miles on the road and it feels fine, the gears change smooth and quickly. Just getting used to the hydraulic brakes, very easy to lock the rear brakes with only moderate pressure on the lever, I think they will bed in after a couple of hundred miles.

Feels nice for the price, I think the brakes are the key selling point of the bike. The bike will proably get 50-100miles per week so it will be well used.

A hardtail is probably a good choice for Hull! Plenty of cycle lanes, but all seem to be in really poor condition. Especially Clough Road and Mount Pleasant since they resurfaced them with that awful loose gravelly stuff.

I cycled along Clough road last thursday morning in the rain on my race bike with 1in 700c wheels, the loose top dressing was pretty hairy in parts

I ride from west Hull to the Guildhall 5 or 6 days per week, and then I ride around Cott, Skidby, Riplingham and upto 'Cave a few times to keep fit. I usually run 30-40miles per week but I injured my calf running in the Humber Bridge half marathon in June and it still isn't properly healed yet. Still got some scar tissue and I need to strengthen the muscles again, thought some good mileage on the bike would help maintain my fitness levels.

Just wish they would install a cycle lane all the way from Willerby Rd, along Spring Bank west and down the Baghdad High street into town centre. Would make my ride to work a lot safer! :D

I'm starting to look at a full susser now. The Commencal Meta 5.2 looks pretty nice. It'll have to wait though as I just go a Cove Stiffee in white. Will post some pics in a few days.

I end up doing a daily commute along Beverley Road, Clough Road (with the infamous Suicidal Roundabout of Impending Doom near B&Q), then Stoneferry, Mount Pleasant and a short bit of Holderness Road.

The lovely low round top kerbs running at 45 degrees across the cycle paths (Stoneferry, on pavement) are quite interesting in the wet, especially with slicks. Wierd too, as the road is incredibly wide with the exception of the railway bridge.

When the company moves after Xmas, i'll have a marginally longer trek to Priory Park in Hessle, but the roads are sooo much better :)

Wow there sum nice bikes in this thread. I got a Giant XTC SX a few months ago due to a thread on OCUK, im really pleased with it, best bike ive ever owned.
