The Trek you originally suggested is still a good option. I hear Giant make good trail bikes too ;)

Don't choose just on the spec though, you can have full XTR or XX, but if the suspension platform is rubbish, its a waste. The frame is a much bigger consideration on a FS bike than on a hardtail

Surely when you are looking at a bike spec the suspension comes under that as well :confused:
 
Suspension parts (ie shock) maybe, but platform is the frame? Spec is the stuff you can change, or that's what I meant anyway. Maybe components is a better word..
 
He's got a good point though, the Pitch for example is extremely versatile and can be had for next to nothing if you go second hand, they're still cheap new, great frames and a good base to upgrade upon.

I'd suggest going over to a forum like mtbr and searching through the many, many threads with titles like 'what's all mountain?' 'when does trail become all mountain' and 'mountain dewww yeahhh!!' really this topic is discussed to death in some places.
