So I was fortunate enough to bag a 6900xt today but as I wasn’t sure of it going through I also bagged a 3080. The question is which one do I keep and therefore which do I return?

gaming at 1440p, no interest in moving to 4K although its a 165hz screen. Secondly I have an intel 10700 cpu and no interest in changing that either.

price was within £50 of each other...

Thoughts gratefully appreciated.

Prices for both?

The last point made me think likely 3080 but depends on what games and features you want.

If you had said will likely get a 5000 ryzen at some point I would have chosen the 6900XT.

If price was within £50 of each other then you probably massively overpaid for the 3080 if you got the 6900xt at MSRP.

If you’re not gaming at 4K then the 69 doesn’t make much sense over the 68, at all. You’re better off saving your cash and getting a 6800xt. In your case I’d personally keep the 3080 due to higher memory bandwidth and better drivers/software support/feature set. However I also wouldn’t have paid that much for one. I would wait until stock and prices stabilise, which is why I’m waiting until next year. Do you really need one in such a rush?

Is your monitor freesync or gsync, or both. Personally i would stick with the 6900xt or even replace it with a 6800xt, which would probably make a lot of sense.

I would stick with the 3080. Better features like DLSS and better RT support. Is your monitor Gsync compatible?

You should stop abusing returns policies.

You are part of the reason retailers are 'scalping'. They have to take restocking costs and then can't sell the item as new.

You are also contributing to the shortages for the rest of buyers as you now have 2 cards and clearly only want 1.

Well done

If that's 'abusing' returns policies (which incidentally are a fundamental part of distance selling regulations and the reason can be simply because you've changed your mind) then I'm a Dutchman.
Retailers are making huge profits on inflated prices evidenced by the fact the OP paid almost the same for their 3080 as the 6900XT which in itself is scandalous and an abuse of the customer due to
perceived 'supply problems'. Putting huge mark ups on products over and above their msrp simply because you know some customers will bite is reprehensible and an abuse of their position
Just like ordering two cards when you only need one both practices are entirely legal so if the retailers don't like returns they should switch to another business or shut up shop.

At 1440p both cards are great. I'd probably stick with Nvidia in your situation, although my real choice would be to sell or return both and wait for the 3080 Ti. I realise this isn't what you necessarily want to hear. :)

But this is probably the right answer, nonetheless.

As I see it:

Radeon 6800-6900XT = poorer RT performance
RTX 3080 = potential VRAM limit

So I'd make the call based on whether you think RT is worth it or wait (lol) for the 3080Ti.

Keep 3080 and SELL 6900XT. Already been had a go at using the returns policy so Sell it and make up for some of your own over payment on the 3080 as it'd be harder to get your money back the other way around.

If your monitor is Freesync and G-sync compatible then either cards will work. If G-sync module then you'll want the 3080. DLSS & RT well established on the 3080, mileage may vary as it's unknown how this will develop on the AMD cards. AMD card has 16GB but looking at current games and even at 4k resolution the 3080 does really well. DLSS helps when FPS becomes too low at high resolutions anyway. Either card is good, ultimate decision is if your monitor is G-sync or Freesync (G-sync compatible). In fact your monitor if freesync doesnt need to even be G-Sync compatible (That just means a monitor meets the same spec as a g-sync monitor module regading VRR works from 40 fps or whatever G-sync VRR starts working at.

So 3080 keep - sell the 6900XT to make up some of the 3080 cost. you were already scalped at the retailers on the 3080 so dont send the 6900XT for them to get the scalping - sell it yourself. Shame you dont have +1,000 posts to put it in the members market on here and create a popcorn worthy sale.

Gotta go with keep the 3080 and sell or return the 6900XT. Right now I prefer the RTX cards because of features like DLSS and their ray tracing performance. Not to mention that my experience with AMD GPU drivers has always been less than stellar. Whilst AMDs GPU division has come a long way, and it's great for everyone that they're competitive, I still feel the RTX cards are just the better product, especially with them supporting both G-Sync and VRR these days.

I just love how all of a sudden, Ray tracing is the MUST have! when 2 months ago it was a gimmick and probably will be for another 2 generations.

if you paid within £50 of each other then i can only assume you have massively over paid for the 3080.

if i was buying one or the other, it would be the 3080 based on price. The 6900xt is way over priced for what it is.
