all of sudden the LAN on my PC takes about 40 seconds to start when windows commences AND I am having shut down problems.

They (these tow problems) started all at the same time.

Have had this problem before - reinstalled windows (which I dont really want to do again) which cured the problem - what could it be?

start > run type msconfig and hit enter then disable services and startup programs you dont need as they could be causing conflicts.

you could also try registry tweaks, although if you mess up your registry then your windows may not work so dont edit stuff without knowing what it does.

start > run type 'regedit' hit enter and navigate to ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\’
Highlight the ‘WaitToKillAppTimeout’ value.
Set it to ‘1000′.
Now highlight the ‘HungAppTimeout’ value
Set it to ‘1000′ also.
Highlight the value ‘AutoEndTasks.’
Change the value to ‘1′

then navigate to
‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\’
Highlight the value ‘WaitToKillServiceTimeout’
Change this value to ‘1000.’

i use ccleaner which is a registry cleaner to check for errors which could be causing problems.

Have you got the latest driver for the NIC?

yes I believe so - have just checked again!

But why would it go from working correctly - starts at start up - to being delayed by about 40 seconds for no apparrant reason.

PS - have tried the reg mods as suggested above - no difference!

cheers guys

thanks for the info - think I have sussed it - its a HP Device Discovery process thats making it all HANG!

Anyway - how do I permanently delete the HP files as they are not in the add/remove programs folder anymore.

Can I properly alter the MSCONFIG file?

When I disable this HP service - windows loads - LAN on - no worries apart from all the error messages.
