Big help - android 'google 1' somehow deleted a lot of images

Wonder if someone can help

Noticed my Samsung galaxy s9 was getting a bit full.

Went into Google one, and cleared what it SAID was emails of nearly 5gb

Woke up this morning and my gallery on my phone is missing lots of images.

Google photos is fine as backed up etc.

Not in recycle bin. Looking around 4-5 gb of images.


No idea why it did this. Mainly screenshots and picture folder missing lots.


Any advice on this please. Gutting really as some images id like to have kept. Why the hell it deleted them I don't know. As it was under email heading witching Google 1

Mine has done this before - it deleted loads of images/videos from a concert I had recently been to. Never got them back unfortunately

Edit: wait, are you saying they're in your Google Photos, but just not in the gallery of your phone?

Yes. They seem to be in Google photos. But not android gallery
But from memory it saved around 4gb of space when Google one deleted the old emails. But somehow, it seems it also screwed up photos too

It's a feature, it'll delete images from your phone that are saved to Google photos therefore freeing up local storage.

Maybe so Tom. But something I have not experienced before.

A little annoyed as were in specific folders. Now not.

Granted all in Google photos. But was used to gallery

Google Photos will explicitly tell you that it will delete the photos and videos in your phone after it has backed it up to the cloud.

I was a bit annoyed when it first happened to me as like you, I also had folders.

Through the years I've used albums instead, and Google Photos' algorithms are quite nice, recommending the creation of albums based on EXIF data.

It's also a massive saving grace when switching devices.

Using Google Photos with iOS is less than ideal though.
